Pretty funny how fast that site imploded. A bummer really, they had a great thing going, too bad they took it all for granted. F'em now.

I never got the memo, I come here and the member picture gallery is gone a week after I sign up. HB owes us our pictures.

Yes it also seems like all sites are very slow. Maybe not much going on overall in boating.

Yesterday there were 335 people on this site and 12 on the Hot Boat site. It started with Morgan writing in her column that the new Hot Boat Online would not be a social networking site or a site for the latest song chain. She posted the web address to My Space and suggested that people go there for that kind of thing. Then they banned a good percentage of the regulars. Now they're wondering what happened. What a bunch of retards.

    Well...

Since they're in business to make money. And since their income comes mainly from magazine and website advertising revenue. It stands to reason that when they ran off their subscribers and board members their income dropped. Bad business plan.

I can only speak for my personal experience, but being relatively new to performance boating the Hot Boat forums are where I learned a lot about boats. I bought my boat from a HB member, felt confident I was getting a good boat because he was an active member and I felt that he would not sell a bad boat and risk ruining his reputation. Also bought parts, insurance and services from advertisers, kind of a "keep it in the family" philosophy. I also met some very cool people and made some good friendships. In addition, when the site went down, I didn't bother renewing my subscription. For me, there was a direct correlation between the site and the magazine. When HB took away my outlet to discuss and learn about boating, I reciprocated by spending my money with another magazine. Now their advertisers don't get my eyes...and in the publishing business advertising is what pays the bills.

I would suspect this is true. You can tell an advertiser how many copies you publish, but you can't tell them how many people are looking at those published copies. With the web they can determine the number of unique hits, pages visited, sites they came from before yours, how long they were on your site, click through banners, ect... The web is a very powerful advertising medium with the ability to articulate to a prospective advertiser the potential marketing opportunity by purchasing space/banners on your site. As written in the opening post, would you rather spend your advertising dollar on a site that has 355 users on-line or 2 guests.

They shot themselves in the foot. They may have removed a certain element, but in the process they lost their core following.

And where did you come up with that scientific number??? I'm willing to bet that they lost way more than that, not that they'd ever admit to having a dip in circulation.

I think magazines have to disclose the number or issues printed and number of subscribers. It's usually burried in the fine print on the first couple pages. If I had an interest I'd pull a HB from 2 years ago and compare it to the most recent issue I have....which was given to me by a friend....some friend

easy to sell advertising on that old HB site- if you told a potential client to look around that website I don't think it would make the sale any easier.
My guess is the bad blood that they created with the handling of the site is a small slice of the pie- all of you that feel so wronged by Hot Boat would just love to think they regret their decision and subsequently lost $ because of it -in reality they probably lost ten subscribers in Havasu
Count my suscription as one of the 10 not renewed!

Admin here doesn't really want more threads on hb bashing which is kind of the direction this is going. So moving to gws sooner rather than later. This stuff has pretty much been beat to death.
