    Default Impeller question

I'm running a bbc 454 w/around 525 hp. Im running an A impeller and only hitting 5200 rpm's. My motor is capable of running 5700-5800 rpms. The guy I had bought my boat from was going to put a B impeller in it to get the rest of the RPM's out of the motor. My question is how tough it is to swtich impeller's and will switching to a B impeller will that get me to my desired RPM's and how many mph would I pick up?? I've got the B sitting here so if it will help me gain some speed i'll put it in. Thanks in advance.

When changing out an impeller from an A to B on paper you will pick up 2 to 3 hundred rpm's. But what happens when you allow the engine to spool up easier and a lot of times the rpm increase will be 4 to 5 hundred . As you allow the engine to turn more rpm's the engine makes more power and torque so the gains can mean a noticable pick up in acceleration and overall a very nice gain in speed. What size boat to you have?

It is a 18 ft 74 Tahiti. I'm hitting around 75-80 mph right now. Would like to get into mid 80's.

Putting the engine into a better power range should help you acheive your goal. Remember as the impeller gets smaller your cruising rpm will increase in order to run the same speed, but I think the impeller change at this time is justified.
