Default 28 eagle that wont settle down

So I am helping a friend with his 98 eagle 28 closed bow with mercury 525 making 540hp and running a bravo 1 drive with a labbed 28 bravo 4 blade turning 5100 rpm but after about 60 mph the boat will hop and bounce around any advice or ideas on what to look for to fix this? We have seen 80mph so far but only for a few seconds and backed out as it got hairy. The gimble is the heavy duty one and was just installed when the motor went in. Install was done here in Wi by Gill Marine

Have you tried using the trim? Or the ride plates?

Lol yes we have been using the trim

I mentioned getting trim tabs to him but everyone has told him it wont stop the bouncing, I am a jet guy so this prop stuff is new to me.

would a hook in the bottom or such cause this? It is a step hull version

Is this with ZERO trim? A little trim? A lot of trim?

if not, try with zero trim - WOT, and see what he gets.

    If it doesn't hop around, he's over-trimming.

If that's not it, have him borrow a different prop of any sort. See what happens with the change.

You really should have external hydraulic steering. If it does not have hyd steering, check drive for steering slop.

Is this Eagle a straight vee bottom or does it have a step bottom? Does it have a pad on the bottom? Are you running a 4 blade or 3 blade prop?

Greg it has a step bottom on it and is flat across at the transum on the bottom, running a bravo 1 4 blade labbed 28p prop we think there is more to go on top end and could hit the rev limiter but it dances around too much after about 75 mph to safely test peak rpm.

I have told him from the start to get dual ram steering on it and he is looking into that right now.

With the stock 502 and a 4 blade bravo1 26p prop it ran 67 mph on gps. But still had the hop in the hull back then with old motor and old gimbel.

Mel at Gill marine installed the 525 motor and installed the HD gimble assembly, would trim tabs be the ticket also?

We have tried props from 32p down to 28p the 32 would not go past 4600 rpm and the power in the 525 acccording to the builder is closer to 5000rpm so thats why we were zoning in on a 28p prop which seems to work nice for holeshot and top end if the boat would settle down.

Have you tried a 3 Blade prop. The 4 blades on some boats will just not work due to fact that they create to much tail lift. The 3 blade has a more laid back blade angle and this could possibly solve your problem. I am currently rigging a boat for Eliminator and I will ask Bob for his opinion.

    Default 28 Eliminator

Does the boat rock side to side? I just talked to Bob and he said see if you can't find a 27 or 29 3 blade and try that. I also have a 28 Eliminator ,1994 502 non step bottom and runs a 3 blade.

the boat bounces front to back like a jetboat without a place diverter or ride plate all messed up.

I will see if we can find someone that has a 27 or 29 3 blade and see how that goes

Thanks for the help I will post results as soon as we try it.

just called my buddy and he tried a 27 3 blade and could not get out of the hole with it so he will try the 29 3 blade tomorrow if they have one at Gill marine.

Also said the boat is getting external steering now too.

When they installed the gimble did they change the X dimension? Do you know what the X dimension is?
