    Default Steering ?

I am putting together a boat that I got dissasembled.
The steering cable is 3-4 feet too long which creates this snake like mess in the engine compartment with too many bends and makes it hard to steer.
Could I flip the helm over in the dash placing the cable end of the rack to the right running the cable in a "u" shape and back down the the driver side of the boat?
Would this make the boat steer backward?

Thanks for anyh input you may have.

LOL! Yes you can run it down the other side! And when mounting the helm you will have to think about what the helm does! (stock) Left turn pulls the steering cable and right turn pushes the cable! Now in stock position the cable is mounted to the bottom of the helm. When you run the cable on the other side you will have to flip the helm 180* and the cable will have to be mounted on top of the helm! It is not a big deal because I know of a few fresh builds that the cable was mounted wrong and first trip to the lake was backwards steering!

    It will work!

LOL Yeah I started off with it backwards. The cable is not long enough to go down the other side. Laying upside down looking at the push / go right , pull /go left.
and putting the helm in upside down twice I felt pretty remideal.

I did finally get it right, but I have a snake pit of cable in the engine compartment.

So If I am thinking correctly set the rack in there with the cable exiting to the right, make a gradual 180 loop with it back down the driver side and install the helm
so that the push pull is correct.

    Damn Who's on first!!

With correct pinion to rack articulation , if long enough you could run it across under the dash and down the right side to a sweeping bend into the steer tube or often times we run it down the left and drop it out just ahead of the front of the engine and then straigh back along the left side stringer (if you dont mind having the cable run across the floor a couple feet) Tom

yeah gotta love the backwards steering, my first jet, Taylor SJ, we put the steering on upside down, dad went for a test run.....never left the no wake zone....LOL
Before we even left for the water, we stared at the pump, talked about it, drank a few more beers, looked at it, worked the steering...and looked right....WRONG...lol
we had to flip the helm over too, had to drill new holes in the dash. no biggie. good luck
