    Default Murl Burton (sp?)/Gullwing/Martinez/Hell Fire...

A friend of mine bought a CP Gullwing that was Murl Burton's (R.I.P.)(sp?)who used to run out at Martinez. Maybe this will help, Mr. Burton was a really big guy. The Gullwing was white, orange striping, center steer, front seat was a wrap around bench, boat said Hell Fire on the back, and ran a 180 degree BBC ( ! ). I've heard two different people say the nickname Mr. Silicone, referring to Mr. Burton and his use of silicone on everything. There seems to be some descrepency as to how fast this boat used to run, did anyone from this forum ever race against Mr. Burton? One story was mid-nineties and the other story was 123.

I was a little bored but the G/F just gave me a honey-do.

It was weird looking at a BBC shortblock with 4 pistons at one level and the other 4 at an opposite level. The hull is really light, I think he said 375 lbs..

The over-transom single outlet header was really cool looking, I wish I had taken a pic of it before the boat was taken apart.

Back in the day me and my roomate went and visited Merl to talk about loaders and some other things. And from his own Mouth he said that he ran 117mph. Which is pretty impressive considering his size!

So are you keeping the headers that came off that boat? If not I would be interested in possibly purchasing them. Or if you dont want to sale them maybe I could cruise by and get some dimensions so I can make my own set? let me know.

Is it a CP or one of Neil's? I know I have heard the name and as I recall it was for sale in the trader a few years back....

No it was not one that I built. He had it long before I started building boats. Seen it at the river many times. I never saw it run over 40 to 50 mph if even that! If he ran it hard out there I never saw it or ever heard of anyone seeing it either. It did sound good though. I know the headers were 180's but don't know about the " flat crank or 180* crank" from your description. He sure was a funny man! He had alot of stories and alot of them were about his boats. I think that boat is still here in San Diego somewhere.

Yes Bob, And he still has it. That was the boat that Bruton raced and I think it was his son/step son or something like that Jack that drove it. That boat is a tunnel and it is very light. The boat this guy is talking about is a gullwing the Murl took to the river and ran around.

Neil I remember that boat and as you said the fastest I ever saw it run was the trip to the sand bar from Martinez. Murl never drove it fast at the sand bar. It did sound cool with that set of headers that was on it.

A very good friend of mine (Mike) bought it. I keep trying to talk him out of the bow tie heads that were on it but no go so far. He doesn't want to sell anything off the engine (if he does he'll read this and let me know). But the boat is going to get a whole new paint job, interior, and a fresh 468 blower engine. I'm pretty sure he said it's a CP Gullwing, but I could be wrong. I'm positive that it's light.

i raced chris several times while he was running that boat. i remember at sandiego a few years back, he took it home on saturday i think, and came back with some gullwing because the tunnel was so light the water was throwing him all over the place... a little piece of trivia - lance matty's last pass was against chris in that tunnel....
