    Default removing/replacing rub rail & patching small holes

    I have two questions that I would like to get some feedback on. I did a search but didn't see anything that applied. First: Is it difficult to remove/replace a rub rail? What is required? I have a nice SS rub rail that's in good shape, but eventually I'd like to remove it to sand and paint . I was gonna cap it, but I don't think my boat has lines that would benifit from capping. Second: I have some 1/4" or so holes in the fiberglass that I'd like to fill. I have access to both sides of the holes. Can I use something like Duraglass for this? Or do I need to get into the whole resin process? Thanks

    If your going to keep and reuse the rub rail, just drill out the rivets and save the rail. As for plugging the holes, there are e few ways to do it. Get some cabasill and mix it with resin and tape off the holes from the underside and then fill the holes and sand smooth for the paint or gell. If you get some orange gell, you could also mix the gell into the cabasill and then it would match the color thats there if your not wanting to paint / gell right away.

    Took me like an hour, including the time it took to cut the wood plugs. The "fun" part will be all the sanding and filling.

    HJ, thats not how you cap a boat....and yes, that does look like it took you about an hour. There is ALOT more involved in capping a boat, as the above post says. Nice thread hijack!

    Lookin' good HJ. You didn't want tunes out on the river? I had a bad ding in the dash which is right where I was gonna put the radio anyways....worked out well for me.

    I guess I was trying to take the easy (cleaner) way out. Resins and epoxies just seem like such a pain in the ass. I was hoping a little duraglass filler would suffice......guess not.

    Read the first post again RaceFace!!!!!

    This thread is about more than capping a boat!!!!!! Part 1 was already addressed. Part 2 is about filling 1/4" holes!!!!! I filled 8, 1/4" holes and 3, 1/2" holes tonight!!!!

    Also it's hard to take more than an hour doing fiberglass stuff, it tends to harden up after about 15 or 20 minutes!!!! How long would it take you to do that? 4 hours????

    And the pictures don't do it any justice, it will sand down very smooth, I am expecting to only need filler on some very small sections!!!!

    I don't feel this is a thread hijack at all!!!!

    Dude, take a pill (since you aren't old enough to drink), and a deep breath.

    I watch you on these boards all the time and myself and alot of other people have offered you ALOT of advice to try to help educate you on jets, jet boating, motors and all that go along with it. Some of the things you do and say on here scare alot of people here and its been mentioned before by several other people that they are glad they aren't going to be boating where you are.....purely for their safety.

    Sticking up for a guy that runs glass fuel filters against others that know better and have more experience, your electrical mounted under your weep holes in the headers (several warned you, including myself), rubber line run too close to your pipes (warned again by others), throwing down a bunch of beers and wanting to 'flooring it' (warned by ALL on that one) and the latest...running your boat out of gas cans?? DUDE!!

    And now I see you on the HB threads throwing around your 'infinite boating wisdom' when you have never even been behind the wheel. I just laugh because HB sucks and you are just adding to the joke over there.

    As I have said 3 different times (and others have said too), there are many people on here who know ALOT from experience and by trial and error.

    Mellow out and take the advice and slow things down. We are all a 'family' here and we all want safe boaters out there in safe boats. Cutting corners isnt safe for you, your passengers, or any of us on the water with you. And acting like you know when you don't doesn't impress anyone....especially the guys that have been boating for a while.

    Again, take a pill and roll with the jokes. We all bang on each other here. Its all good.

    I didnt address the capping, Just the hole filling in his deck.

    To cap a boat is alot more typing then i really feel like doing.

    Trust me......it's alot more work than I want to do also. My boat doesn't have the cool lines that 'capping' works for. Mine kind of has a 90 degree angle from the middle of the boat all the way around the back.

    Let's clear some things up here!

    1)I never stuck up for someone running glass fuel filters. I was told not to run my plastic fuel filter, and immediately removed it and put in a metal fuel/water separator. I just asked the reasoning behind not running glass filters. Now I know, so I will never try it! Even though I never intended to.

    I stuck up for using stainless bolts on the intake grate. And got smashed on that one. Thanks guys, it's the only way to get it through my thick skull.

    2)I didn't do my electrical. The guy that did do my wiring put it down there. I don't know shit about wiring and happily admit it. And it's hard to tell the guy that did it for me, for free, that I want it moved and all rerouted. But, I will try.

    3)I don't remember being told that my water lines were too close to my headers. Can you please refresh my memory, by posting that up for me. But, like you said, "trial and error"! How do I know what too close is, until I melt one.

    4)"throwing down a bunch of beers and wanting to 'flooring it'" This was the previous owners, not me! (again like you said I'm not, "old enough to drink") And he ain't touching the boat when it gets in the water!

    5)"running your boat out of gas cans" Also not my call, I'm more of a bystander when it comes to starting my boat. If my mechanics, who have been doing this for 30 years or so, say it's alright, then I just roll with it. Also, you guys never gave me a reason for not doing it (until tonight, thanks Some Kind Of Monster), if you don't give me a reason or tell about an experience you've had, then I am left to assume that you are being over cautious and slightly paranoid. Sorry, just how my brain operates, not trying to be a punk or anything. It just gets a little crazy in here, and I ask 1 simple question and get 10 completely different responses on how to do it, then I get smashed when I choose the cheaper, but still effective way of doing it. Ex. My Plumbing thread: I choose to not run a thermostat because there are boats that have run for 30 years without them and it worked back in the 70s, without all the fancy crap that is on some of these boats, but then I get all these people telling me to run a thermostat and posting pictures of their thermostat setups! That's not helpful to me.

    I don't even have an electric pump to drain my tanks, so I have to rely on someone else to supply the pump, and I have to do it on their schedule.

    I don't think that any of my 7 HB posts make me sound anything like an expert or that I'm even trying. (I just wanted to see what all the bitching was about when HB went down.) All I did was voice my opinion on the new Bassett headers (can I not voice an opinion on how something looks? The thread had nothing to do with how they functioned, or anything technical like that), make a smart ass comment on anodized fittings, and voice my opinion about what type of headers to use (before he said that he had an engine cover, which was his stupid mistake on his part, thus his stupid question, that shouldn't have even been asked). http://www.hotboat.com/forums/search...archid=2213601

    My boat is probably more safe than any of theirs! Let's see, 800-1000hp vs my 320hp or so truck engine, nitrous and blowers vs. my N.A. slug, insane amounts of speed and crazy amounts of pump pressure vs. my stock turd. Now, who's boat sounds more safe, and who's sounds like the crazy guys boat, who only a true adrenaline junkie or racer would drive or ride in?

    Been trying to mellow out, but then you post something like that, and it seems to have hit a nerve.

    Do your research a little better, before you post something like that next time. And I'm sure, with you, there will be a next time. Until then.

    Also, I don't smoke. And it would be very stupid to smoke while working with resin.
