Question Hello, New guy with questions???

Hey all, I am new to this forum. I have a buddy looking to sell a project boat. I am interested but need help identifying what it is. I build hot rods so have no concern I could build it, just wondering what it is and if it’s a good style hull. I am looking for a play boat. I already have a day cruiser for the family. Only have a few pics now but will get more. My buddy says he was told it was an early 70's Hondo, 18ft, set up for BBC and has a Berkeley 12JC Pump. Any help would be great, thanks!

Well its definitely a Hondo. depending on the mounts it has is what depends on what engine its set up for . take a hammer to the stringers listen for DEAD wood is going to determine how big of a project you are jumping into!
BTW it already has a ride plate so someone has ben tweaking the pump. check for a loader inside the intake and see what impeller is in it before ya build your engine.

Your location says Washington, if thats the case then I would hitch it up and run it down to Skagen Boats in Auburn Home.
Jerry and Tony will tell you what you have and what to expect from it.

Welcome to the boards , looks like a decent project depending on how early 70's (pre hin assignments) it should have a HIN number or ID tag , possibly some numbers on the registration to effectivley ID the hull if so post them up the folks will explain how to research lots of jets have similar or near identical look and design Tom

Heres a Cole we just sold for comparison

The stingers sound alright I think, but I figured they would need replaced. I will change the impeller if I need to, I already have a built BBC sitting in the shop that is asking to live in the boat.

I am in Washington but on the other side of the state from Auburn so that would be a five hour drive one way.

The boat does not have a hin, at least I cannot find one anywhere, no tag and no title. Registration number turn up nothing.

The guy that has it claims he was told it was one of only twelve made…. But I know what people say it is and what it really is are different things. I would love to figure out a make and year for this thing.

    Thanks, all

Definitely a Hondo or atleast a copy of one. Pantera hull, fast boats, a little narrow and the interior room suffers because of it.

Before you go throwing your built BBC in it, do some research on putting car motors in boats...

Other than picking the right cam(which is an easy swap), is there anything internally I need to be careful about as far as putting a car engine in a boat?

Also can anyone give me details as to what hull the boat is? Hondo pantera??? anything else, maybe year range. Any help is much appreciated. Thanks.

Does the guy you're buying from have the registration? Should have some ID numbers on that.

Check out the dyno section. Should be some info on there about using an automotive engine in a jet boat. There is a lot of difference in the expansion of the pistons and cylinder walls in a jet boat vs a car since the block get continuous fresh flow of cooler water, unlike a car. The block and pistons should be machined correctly for that difference if done correctly.
There will be much more knowledgeable people posting that may contradict me though.
