Question SBC vs. Stock 455 Olds

    Ok....here's my situation....
I've been contemplating whether to put a small block in another boat I'm getting.
My current boat is a heavy Kona with a bone stock 455. I have a basic 350 that I could throw a few bolt on's on to use in this other boat...or....yard the 455 out and use it. Using the SBC in the other hull will keep my Kona a runner....but I'm not sure about the basically mild 350 running an A impeller in the other boat, but it is a lighter hull than the Kona....
The sbc will only be temporary to get the boat on the water quickly.....'cause it's all I got right now...and the boat has Chevy mounts.
I have a 440 Chrysler that I'll be collecting parts for over the winter....

Thoughts on a stock 455 Olds vs. a "mild" sbc???

    Thanks fellas.....

Just do it. Assuming you have the exhaust, and front motor plates, and pto etc. Don't kill your runner. Its always nice to have a back up. imo

Put the small block in... Look at the thread of small blocks in jets. It won't be a beast spinning a A impeller but it will run!

I have run both in jets and I would throw a little $$$ into the SBC, A 350 HP small block will make a respectable lake boat. I think my old sbc ran about 60mph, not fast but I had it for about 8 years with no real problems.

Ill race ya? Lake tank to lake tank!

We both have heavy beasts and you have seen my rig run with a little motor. Keeps the back of the boat a little drier too.

Plus OLD SLO MOBILEs are UGLY.

The boat your talkin about, does it start with S and end with R?

I'd run the Olds. You cannot argue with an extra 100 inches and they are quite reliable and great motors.

Default Sbc vs 455 vs 440

If you always ready have 455 in boat run it. U plan on putting 440 in it anyway. I put 406 in my Taylor Sj because my 455 blew up. If its running and together spin the Crank and mash the gas and enjoy it now, however if you weren't going to put 440 in it. I would slap a 400 Crank in that 350 block with 6 inch rods and some nice pistons, comp cam, nice set of heads and intake and carb, and B cut impeller and you would be pleasantly surprised with power reliability and cheap parts for rest of Boats life. Not to mention with gas the way it is it would sip compared to 440 and 455. A 450 up sbc in Jet with b cut and tight pump push mid 70s all day,and run it hard all day. And stay a little father from that gas pump that sits on lake or river that is doubled in prices. That pump you say DAM when you see the price. Think about what you want to do. If olds was in it running i would run it put its future on the stand and build it how u want take your time, because its running with 455 for you to enjoy now.

    Default Sbc

put the sbc in it. and dont look back. For the amount of money your gonna dump into that 440 chry, you could put 1/2 the amount in the sb and run faster. Plus sb parts are cheaper and plentiful....JMO. Good luck with whatever you do, and be safe!!!!

FWIW - my first jet boat had a 468 BBO in it when I bought it. Not sure of actual horsepower...but it'd spin whatever impeller it had to 5100 rpm. I know it had the higher compression pistons and a single carb tunnel ram....I'd guess 400-425 hp?

I swapped it out for a 347 LS1 with head work and a very mild cam. Spun the same impeller to 5300 rpm. That engine is proven to make 435-450 hp.

My current boat had a 330 hp BBC when I bought it; replaced with a 550 hp 383 LS1 and I don't regret it.

    Thanks for the input fellas....
I've decided to keep my Kona together so I have a boat to run while I get parts rounded up for my new boat.....
The SBC I got will be a mild rebuild and will be swapped into my SWB Chevy lowrider....the built 454 will come out and go into the boat....better all around for all vehicles...
