    Default stumped

first of all i am a body man not an engine mechanic i know just enough to be dangerous so ill explain my problem. i ordered a new set of valve covers for my 468 and i put them on last night i cranked it up just long enough to make sure everything was ok and the rockers were not hitting the cover everything was ok, this morning i was gonna take it to the lake so i was gonna start it for a sec and it would barely start and now it will not idle and it is also backfiring through the carb it has a holley double pumper on it. i replaced the plugs, wires, rotor, cap and coil today and its still doing the same thing. im thinking maybe its the valve or possibly a worn cam. any info would be greatly appreciated

Any noise? Like ticking? Pull the valve covers and start it. You may have a crossed plug wire if you took them off. Just recheck everything you touched.

i checked all the wires twice they are in the right place it starts pretty easily it just sounds like it not running on all 8 cylinders until you rev it then it sounds almost right but then it usually backfires through the carb and dies

Been sitting awhile? Old fuel? Dirty fuel maybe plugged the carb and now it's lean?

If nothing is broken in the valvetrain, back-pop through the carb is a LLLLOOOONNNNNGGGGG flame from a LEAN mixture. Check your fuel supply.

so you just changed your valve covers? was the distributor moved or removed? On a BBC you can have 5 and 7 crossed and it will run like what your saying. When I run into problems like this at the shop I stop and start over from the start. Roll the motor over and check your valve train as well. Good luck.

Put the old valve covers back on and see if the problem goes away. also did you remove a vac line from the back of the carb and forget to plug? Mark

If you KNOW the ignition is right all the way through.....it has to be carburetion.

Do you have another carb you can put on - maybe borrow one? Doesn't have to be same size or anything.....just one that will run on the boat to verify.

We're they pre made wires? If they weren't and you made the cut to fit ones. Maybe some of the connections are loose?
