trying to replace my steering cables...not really familiar with how to do that, so I took the cover off...took the gears out, removed the bolts from the housing...but this center gear doesn't appear to want to move. Any tips, suggestions, or instructions?
Its an older rotary reeel system , not sure which brand hard to tell from that picture alone (working from my smart phone) , some rotatries can still get replacement cables , we use rack and pinion but still install and sell rotary systems when available space is an issue , IMO rack and pinion systems tend to be more positive Tom
to remove take the wheel off , pull the hub and there should be attaching bolts to remove (the helm) under the helm cover
Do yourself a favor and have him work on it so you know its right. When right it should be tight cables, and move smoothly. If tight to turn or slack cable or both, its not right.
That is a calgo system and the inboard bolt at three o'clock is to lock it down for cable service and lube. Sorry to say but if you took it apart this far it has probably become a birds nest inside the spool. Best bet is remove the the helm and take it to a shop that is familiar with that set-up cables and all if you remove the ring that incases the cables it will get ugly. I know pulling the cable and casing is a ton of fun but its your'e best bet. Also on a side note, alot of guys familiar with the calgo will install the helm and cables, get everything set-up then remove the 1/4 inboard bolt and install a grease fitting for service as that is all they really require! Just remember if you disconnect the cables for any reason (hardware change or whatever) pull the fitting and put the lock bolt back in snug!
Well, I put it all back together, and it (and the jet) turns. Still pretty hard, but it turns. When I turn is one way, the pulling cable at the pump is tight and the other is slack...is that the way it is supposed to be?
If I did not get the hole thing all screwed up...how do you lube it up?
Since it might already be wound incorrectly.....and if you have patients and mechanical skill.....you might try disassembling it to figure it out yourself before sending it back to Norm (Calgo).bulb
I am going to pull the unit and send it out to him and if all goes well my wallet will be about $300 lighter. Not terrible considering putting a couple good cables on another type of unit probably wouldn't have been much worse.
Any tips for pulling the unit out? Steering wheel comes off easy enough then I am looking at a large nut.
3. Try to rock steering wheel/mount loose....gently....to have hub separate from the steering shaft. (may end up needing a puller to remove hub....likely)(may have set screw on hub....loosen)
4. There is a set screw that holds the steering assy in place......loosen set screw.....twist steering assy to break loose from mount.
5. Slide steering assy out through rear of dash.
Picture of my steering here............so you can see the set screw position.
Make sure you ask Norm for the best method (instructions) to reass it back onto the boat to make sure the cables stay correct and taught.
