i remember that pass like it was yesterday. i get goosebumps just watching it again.
october 2002. one month after dale and frank went over. tim goodwin was the driver for rich sr. until that run. after what had happened the month before, a lot of people had second thoughts. at the rio bravo friday night during registration, tim (who is 6'2", 210-220 and a lot younger) got into an argument with rich (who was older, 5'8" or so, maybe 175) over how the boat was going to be run. they stepped outside, and tim proceeded to get his ass kicked by the old man. next morning, tim's walking around with a huge shiner, and rich is climbing in the boat. rich was like the first pair, or maybe second, in the morning. i was in the staging lanes, so could hear it more than see it. richie jr. was in pitt's boat being launched at the moment it happened. pulled out on the rope and didn't really know what was going on until rescue came and got him. rich was messed up for quite awhile. healed ok, but was still feeling it years later.
boat in the outside lane was james pissetti in jim pissetti's "who care's" comp jet. which is now johnd's bgj....
In analyzing videos like this Lots can be learned but this one brought up an interesting question. The angle of attack was a bit high but then got into a small oscillation which grew until the blow over. What caught my eye was something blew off Rich as he was leaving the boat after it went a bit past 270 degrees, in one frame it looks like it has the colors of the boat and some white straps. Was this any safety gear, his pants, or the seat upholstery leaving the boat with him? It's probably insignificant but just wondered. Any one know his injuries at the time. his entry didn't look straight even though his feet hit first. He is also very lucky the boat didn't land on him it looks real close.
Thanks I finally saw the video frame with the partial deck graphics on the part under the boat. Hilatious ride!
