Default help with 1973 starbuck kustom with 455 packajet

I got a great deal on this boat. i traded a crappy atv with full electrical failure strait across lol.

well i was hoping to get some background on starbuck kustom boats.

its got a 455 Berkeley packajet, i got it on the water and the motor roared full bore but only went like 10mph so I'm pretty sure i just need to rebuild the jet, I've seen videos of how to remove the jet but mine has the packjet cover and I'm wondering if i have to pull my motor, any ideas?

I'm going to do a full resto on it

    pics are up

" ok so im just going to buy a fully rebuilt jet and swap them out before i go on with my resto"
any paints you guys would recommend and does anyone have any idea what model this is?
and yes i did clean it up thos pics are kinda old

Don't be running a 455 'full bored" or you will be rebuilding that too.

I'm going to do a full restore on it to, any recommendation and good cheap carpet and upholstery?

    ill get pics up soon
Lots of good info available here on rebuilding that pump. Just do some digging and you will find it. When it comes to boats there is no such thing and good and cheap. You have to pick one or the other. Post some pics of the boat.

Its a pretty safe bet the jet will need attention based on your description of performance, you may be able to get a feel for whats taking place by some inspection via the cleanout cover or from underneath thru the intake , this jet is a relativley uncomplicated device to both remove and repair Congratulations on your aquisition and Welcome to the PB boards Tom

Be sure to go under the boat and look inside the intake to make sure there's nothing inside of it blocking the water flow, might be something simple keeping it from going forward!

What he said! Although a jet is a very robust, simple drive that rarely has problems and almost never needs rebuilding, what you are discribing sounds exactly like a piece of debris caught in the pump.....One little piece of bark stuck on the Leading edge of an impeller blade, and your boat won't go anywhere.....A pump needing a rebuild will generally be able to still get a boat on plane, it just will lose a percentage of it's performance.....Yours sounds like debris or catastrophic failure of the pump....and that rarely happens. Also, really don't turn the Olds any faster than 5000.

"packajet" just meant it was a berkeley package engine/pump combination of some sort, and there were lots of different combinations of "packajet".

the pump could be a je, jc, or jg. if it's a je, the engine needs to be removed to rebuild the pump because the pump has a one piece suction/intake combination that is epoxied to the keel. if it's a jc or jg, the pump can be removed for rebuild without moving the engine.

    Congrats!
Check the reverse bucket, make sure its coming all the way up and out of the jet nozzle path when you're trying to move forward. May be that it just needs a simple cable adjustment.
