    Default Ignition Problem

My key wont turn off the motor. Replaced the Ignition switch and it still doesn't turn off. I have to pull the kill switch out in order to turn off the motor.
Any ideas where to start looking?

Check the diode that comes off the field side of alternator. It can feed back through the ignition and cause this.

X2 on the diode. Q? if you went into say checker and bought an auto alternator, would it also have the diode? Or is that part of what makes a marine alternator marine?

Not necessarily, I have had this problem in the past where the power will back feed into the wiring causing this. It is an easy fix by adding a oneway diode to the excite wire on the alt. 99% chance this is what is causing this problem.

There is a similar diode fix I think for 1-wire alternators. Not sure how, but i think I have heard of such.

Dawg, If you are running a coil, how many wires are hooked to the positive side? If more than one I would disconnect all but the IGN power wire and try again. Then hook back up one by one and see where the back feed is coming from. M
