    I have a 1981 18' Sleekcraft (kauai or rebel, still trying to figure it out).. It has a fresh 420+hp ford 460 & fresh pump.. I'm not sure what my high mph hour is, but it moves pretty good..

    When I bought the boat it came with no place diverter, but had standard (manual adjusting) trim tabs on each side of the transom. I put a place diverter on it and took the trim tabs off. My question is I'm not sure whether it should have a ride plate instead of the trim tabs, or if they serve the same function and should put the tabs back on? I've read that a ride plate can help some smooth some of the bump and slam of running in choppy water, which my boat can get rough.. Also, at times it does want to porpoise a touch when I'm getting up to plane, it's not bad, but noticeable..

    I'm not right to answer this question, but my post is almost guaranteed to draw attention, with a lot of "shut the F up, HJ" comments and maybe some answers to your question. I hate to see your question go unanswered for this long, I saw it earlier and started to type a response, but then decided not to, so here it goes.

    I believe that trim tabs and a ride plate serve completely different functions. The ride plate causes the boat to rise up out of the water even more at higher speeds. While trim tabs help the boat plane out while getting up to speed. Correct?

    dm2bfree, The ride plate you speak of will enhance the ride quality by making the boat act "longer" and give the pump something to "push" against while making a "hole" for the pump to ride in reducing parasitic drag, the trim tabs "almost" do the same thing, but with a twist, the tabs will also work to let the boat turn better and make the boat act longer, however with a little more drag, they both will also cure the porpoise problem and both will have + and - to go with it...

    In my opinion, if you already have the tabs I would put them on and see what changes they offer, all hulls are quite different, so what works for someone else may not work for you.

    A ride plate requires a bit of work, but most of the time the gains are quite noticable, I would have a reputable shop take a look at your set-up and get their .02 cents..


    Just my opinion and almost always blow it out of my butt...
