    Default first jet boat

So i have been lurking on here for a while now got alot of great info from here. I have been looking for a jet for about a year and bought this 87 advantage thats got a 496 bbc solid cam, rectangle port heads,13.5 to 1 comp, tunnel ram and duel holley 650 carbs. The boat has a berkley 12 jg pump with a loader and a place diverter , i dont no what it has for a impeller i will have to replace the gland seal i think as it takes on water. The motor is spinning 7200 rpm but i have only had it out once so far and did not have a gps with me and it was pretty rough when i took it out i was suprised how well this boat handled the rough water it rode pretty good for a low profile boat. So if i stab the throttle it will spin like smoking the tires in a car and i have to let off and take it slow untill it gets up then i can stab it and its goo d from what i have read on here that is the gland seal? or is it just cavitating for some other reason.

Very Nice Boat!!!! What did previous owner say about pump? If 100% sure engine is solid and can borrow a pump rebuild tool kit, Not much to rebuild with proper impellar for your HP and be done with guessing! Hate to waste 1 MPH by not hooking up when you have a powerplant turning 7200 and staying together! I know your first thought is give me the money for rebuild and shoe and ride plate but I have 2 broken boats at the moment and a little tapped Good Luck and have fun!!

thats what the tach says and it seems to be accurate. The motor was dynoed at 740 h.p. according to the previous owner.I had my buddy who builds motors pull a valve cover and ran a scope inside the motor and it is well built,he didn't see any reason it wouldn't turn 7200 or make that kind of power. The previous owner said he gps it at 94 mph now i dont no about that like i said i did not have a gps with me first time out that seems a little fast with just a place diverter and loader but it is definitely very fast.

Do u know what the impeller size is and last time it was rebuilt? It's just 7400 is ALOT of rpms in a jet boat, most guys spinning that are doing 110 plus...

Just for reference I have a very fresh and well built pump with tight clearances, I spin a semi tall B to 6400-6500 and that with around 970hp

No i dont no what impeller is in the boat i am going to check. I did talk to the previous owner to the guy i bought it from as he is the one who put the motor in and he said he gps'd it at 105 mph at 7200 rpm but i wont believe that until i see it for myself.

That pump has to have some big clearances between wear ring and impeller .When it cavitates that bad on take off that's the symptom of a loose pump.

You will just wear out your engine faster, springs, guides, roller lifters if you have them, suck up more gas.Its not a big deal to get the pump rebuilt. As far the pump, hopefully its not aspun wear ring as continuing to drive it would mess up the pump more.

Well after listening to you guys i went and pulled the pump and found out why it was turning 7200 rpm OUCH so thank you it could of been worse if i kept running it. So i called tom at jbp, thanks for all the help tom,and he is sending me a new AA imp and pump rebuild kit. Will see how it runs with a impeller that has all its vanes.
