Well, I took the boat out tonight, and it was running good and hard. I could finally put my foot into it without it making any funky sounds. But, I think I might have ran it just a bit too hard.:):)punch Final pass, started to hear a clanking sound, said uh oh, better put it on the trailer.:)bulb Got it back to the house, pulled the passenger valve cover and here's what I found, yummy.:)st And the #8 intake rocker came off, and the push rod was sticking way out of the hole, and it won't go back down to where it normally sits, so I'm afraid for the worst. I'm going to pull the intake tomorrow and see what's up. But, looks like my season might be over now. Here's some pics.

And HJ, you might want to do your homework on your "solid lifter" upgrade before attempting to throw them into your motor. You don't have the cam for it nor the valve train. A solid lifter motor requires alot more valve train maintenance than you can handle.

Spare us all and Google it. ;)

#225 ·
Yeah, I know. I was just kidding about that one. I've done some reading on the solid lifters in the past cause I was curious about the differences between solid and hydraulic.:)sphss Cause I saw that a lot of the guys on here run solid lifters.

Why did you choose to use copper head gaskets?

Damn economy, I need a job!!!!:|err Nobody is hiring around here. Been hunting for 3 weeks and everywhere I go, they say they'd hire me, but they just don't have enough work coming in to hire on any new employees.:|err I even went today a tried to get my old job back, and I got the same thing from him.:)st

New compression check results!!!

Ok, these look much better, and were done with the starter and about 5-7 cranks. But that #4 is still low. I put a few squirts of oil into the cylinder, like ptz suggested, and tried it again, and it didn't change, so......

Here's the results.

#1 - 165 psi ----- #2 - 165 psi
#3 - 165 psi ----- #4 - 140 psi
#5 - 165 psi ----- #6 - 155 psi
#7 - 165 psi ----- #8 - 165 psi

**+/- 2 psi**

Thanks.:)

#4 blown headgasket, valve to seat issue, or melted slug.

I just got of the phone with Quickjets kids. They said it is best to go to the gas station with a gas can, fill it up, swing by PepBoys and buy 2 flares, and unite said objects!!:D

Just kidding!!

Glad to hear it is back together.

#248 ·
Well gas has dropped a bunch lately, so that might not be a bad idea.:)sphss

$3.09 today, $3.18 yesterday. I hope it keeps on dropping.:D

Hi, just a thought as it has happened to me before check your basset valve to make sure there is nothing in it holding it open, if there is something in it you will be getting water in the motor,as the valve is not shuting all the way at idle thus causing water to enter the motor!!!!! just my .02 also the inlet valve on the pump should be open about 2 turn out or maybe alittle more depending on your motor temp!!

#251 ·
I say run the focker with dry headers for a trip - Isolate your problem . :D But make sure you blocke the water hose - ;);) We don't want that bad boy sinking

Update!!!!

Pump is back together and all sealed up, thanks to Tom at JBP.:) Probably going to take it out on Sunday or sometime next week.

I haven't looked at the Bassett valve yet, but I'll check that out tomorrow.

Thanks guys.:)

Update!!!!

Well I took it out today, and it went fairly well, nothing came apart or anything.:D But I am not at all confident with the valvetrain, and it was very noisy today. And I have tried my hardest to wrap my head around this valvetrain stuff, and I just can't do it. I guess I need to be shown how to do it properly. So I'm gonna go talk to one of my buddies who owns an engine machine shop tomorrow, and see how much he'll charge me to take a look at it, if any. Cause I am tired of chasing my tail with this thing.

Oh yeah, and I have a working tach now!!!!!!:D At WOT she runs about 52 mph at 4400 rpm.:( Stupid truck engine. And around 3300 rpm is a good cruising speed, she runs about 35 mph at that rpm. I think it's got a little more speed in it, I just need to get the engine set up perfect, and the big one is to get the trailer fixed so that the bottom can straighten itself out, and get a large amount of the hook out of the bottom.:)sphss Then it can air out and ride a lot less wet.

Thanks guys.

Very nice.:)devil But one problem, wrong boat!!!!:|err

Yeah, I didn't make it out today. It was recovery day for me.:)grn Last night got a little fuzzy.:)sphss I'm hoping to get it back out this week sometime.:)

Thanks for the pics.

Update!!!!

Ok guys, I am finally happy with my engine.:) Went and talked to my engine builder buddy and he told me basically what sleekcrafter told me to do. Then I asked him about setting my timing and he walked me through and basically showed me how to do it, and let me borrow a nice timing light.:D And now that I have a working tach (thanks again to sleekcrafter) I can actually set/check the total timing, which on my Unilite dizzy, is 34* total because 24* at 3000 rpm is built into the dizzy. I set the timing light to 10* and checked the timing at idle and I was off 2*, so I turned the dizzy until the marks lined up deadnuts, then set the light to 34* and reved it up to 3000 rpm and watched the mark climb right up and stop at 0.:D Wow, a tach is a great thing to have.:)sphss Amazing how much better the engine sounds when the timing is deadnuts perfect, and the valves are adjusted right.:)bulb

Thanks for everything guys.:)

Wow, what a novel idea. Kida sounds like about 2000 previous posts by others on here. Patrick, I am glad you are running good. did you ever get a starter support yet? They have them for dirt cheap at the parts store.

Woooo Hoooo!

WOOOO HOOOO problem solved!!! Damn glad to hear it HJ it was about time to get some or most of the BUGS out! Now it's almost time to set it up for the winter! But it will be ready for next spring! Congratulations X2! WT:)devil

#289 ·
Did you know that during winter storage you should back your valves offffffff lmao ;):D

#295 ·
Oh shit , I'm stepping up in the world, and staying up way too damn late. Just ordered a stainless scoop and some new fabricated valve covers (not from eBay) for the shit sled.:)devil And I'm gonna start getting some quotes for having the interior done, just something simple to get rid of the trash bags.:)sphss I'm also planning on putting in some carpet during the winter.:D
