    Default jet boat question

I have an 18' SK jet berkley pump, ride plate, shoe, diverter and a recent rebuild A impeler, 654 dynoed horse BBC
    2 questions
the motor is spinning 6800-7000 rpm is that to much??
at speed the rear of the boat wanders side to side and it feels like if I stay in it it will get out of control any ideas ???
get blown or get blown away

you are turning about 1000 rpm more than you should, the wandering could be from a loose steering arm or connection, check all steering areas and connections first, pictures would be nice for more details. be safe

Try an A2 impeller and a loader scoop if you do not already have one and check all your steering, do you have any kind of rudder on it? Too many rpm's. Let me know if I can help

My boat drives like this when I have the place diverter angled down. As soon as I pitch the water streem upward it tracks straight again.

Hydro ,with an honest 650hp "A" combination you should be somewhere close to 5600 to 5800 wot (assuming your tach is correct) something clearly wrong Please feel free to call if we can help you sort this out, we can also try to help you figure out the wandering tail issue Thanks Tom

Yep, either you have way more HP than you think (unlikely), or you have a pump issue (assuming the tachometer isn't lying to you, confirm it if possible).

If you truly have arround 650horses, and 7,000RPM, you have either:
    A).- A poor loading condition,
B).- A smaller impeller than you think (like a "C" cut),
C).- A loose fit at the wear ring/impeller (internal "slippage".

A - are you running a stock rock grate, or a loader of some sort?

B - Are you certain of the impeller size (as in did you buy new from a dealer, or a used hand-me-down that COULD have been cut and not marked (a "C" is a damned small cut tho, and unusual (include with (was in boat and prev. owner told me "XYZ")

C - Most likely pump problem, disassemble (at least remove the cleanout cover) and inspect the front face of the impeller. A complete dissy. will let you inspect the side of the wear ring interface area (sealing area) for debris damage (sand, road grit, etc)

    Good luck to ya.

On the rear wandering, a jet at speed may/should have a slightly "riding on grease" feel of not being very well hooked to the water. Kind of a "speed on the edge of controll" thing.

It shouldn't really do any apreciable ammount of "wandering", or risks are very high. Double check ALL slack in the steering and make sure the pivots all have good Nyliner bushings in them, and are not loose/wallered out in the castings.
The bushings are inexpensive, last a loooong time, and are not hard to come by.

this is not a hydro the boat is made by sacramento boat manufacturing, it is a true dynoed 654 horse big chevy all steering is tight it has a 1" shoe it does have a loader the pump was rebuilt by a good friend and almost sure it has an A impeller I have the diverter set to where the boat feels like it is best
