Default Do I need a smaller ID suction seal ?

Slinger ring on shaft is 1.75. Installed new Timken/National oil seal beginning of last season. #451147H - 1.750 x 2.502 x 0.406. Go to lake for testing, come home top off ratchet with gear oil . One week later walk into shop & theres oil trail coming from back of seal. Rest of season had to top it off before pulling out for lake. Never would be empty but always slowly leaked while sitting in shop. I measure the ID of the seals to be 1.700 out of the box. Do I need a seal with a tighter ID ???

Sounds like you might. What pump are you running. Serial # ? There are two basic size slinger rings. (Also some after market off size ones running around out there). Another thing you might want to do while you have it apart is press the slinger ring off of the shaft and coat the shaft with red Loctite, then press it back on. They can leak between the slinger ring and the shaft sometimes. Also put a little black RTV on the back side of the seal when you put it in. And, of course turn the lip towards the bearing.

Duane , It's early dominator model mb 12-s . Serial # 13488. Lip was towards the bearing & black rtv used. I will have the ring pressed off & use some add some Loctite. Do you think I need to find a tighter ID seal ?
    Thanks Rick

That is an early style Dominator. I'm going to the shop after while. I'll do some measuring and contact you back.

I had the same issue with my 12-s. when it got warm in the garage (before ever running new jetaway) I would have a leak of jet away fluid by the rear seal. I took it back apart and used some Loc tite bearing and sleeve material on the shaft/bearing/sleeve interface. I also used a little clear silicone on the outside edge of the seal to suction housing. The fluid was actually creeping in scratches under the bearing and sleeve and bypassing the seal. All is well now. No more leaks.

sorry if this is not what you were talking about.

Sorry I didn't make it back down to the shop today. Yesterday we were boating. Today it turned to ice and snow and I didn't leave the house. Get a hold of me tomorrow after 11:00 am CST and I'll be at the shop. 417-858-8616
