I recently purchased a new throttle cable and the only color it came in was red. I would like it to be black. Any of you guys have any luck painting these cables and it holding up?
Although the majority of 33 series cables are red they can be purchased in black and even blue.Teleflex for example makes several "grades" (prices) of 33 series throttle cables gotta hunch the plastic cable housing wont take paint well Tom
You could look into covering the red cable with a length of shrink tubing. Frys Electronics is where I get mine, comes in a few different colors too. Works really well. A heat gun is the preferred method for shrinkage

I did that trick to my AN push lock fittings to cover the red shoulder sleeve. Get it just a bit larger and it will shrink bout 1/3 its size. I believe the red cables are a bit more durable from the info I've read.
Shrink tube might work. Just remember that after you shrink it and rig it in the boat (bending it) the shrink tube may want to split. Let us know how that works out.
The shrink stays pretty pliable but could wrinkle on you if care is not taken shrinking it. Once you get it shrunk down and tight around your work (straight shots work best) your "good to go". I put a section of white shrink on my Hawaiian's steering tube to hide the ugly marks left by channel lock jaws.
You could try dip in the spray form. It has elasticity to it. Theres a bitchn primer by bulldog that aids in adhering paint to several types of surfaces. Used it on glass and chrome with great results.
Although it may look nice. You just literally put a band aid on a ticking time bomb. All of these cables rely on the plastic jacket to hold the shape of the stainless braid inside. Once the plastic cracks or chips away it has compromised the integrity of the braid and is soon to break.
I guess you can compare it to not rhino lining the floor of your boat. Although it may look nice, all you are doing is blinding yourself of catching a potential problem until it's too late.
Great, thanks for the help. I ordered some 3:1 3/8 shrink tubing from wirecare.com. I have ordered a bunch of my wire sheathing from them. I am going to give it a try. Here is some of the stuff I have done with there cable covers.
