Default Is there such a thing as "Budget Boating"?

I have a little free time on my hands these days, but not too much!...so i was wondering what you guys thought about the old 18' v bottoms and if there were to be a trend to come back around, what brands would you guys/girls like to see make a come back?
I know this would probably not happen and if it did, what type of packages should be offered to make them affordable like back in the day?
I would personaly like to see someone do a Rogers or like a Southwind again!...i think someone could make a real nice comfortable river runner with stock power affordable, logs three point mounting system,etc.etc. and offer the "moon" from there! (Within reason!)
What are your guys thoughts, it seems that the boat builders these days are pulling out the 21' molds and doing some repair's, some re-tooling or at least talking about the direction of recreational boating....you know what they say, "What goes around, comes around!"

Todd it seems that the 19', 20s and 21' mini cruisers are making a come back.
As far as budget boating I have been doing it for years.

you guys on the west coast make those old roger's haul ass, i'd like to see 1 of those and a new taylor sj, or a sanger sj with modern ammentities.

Dare to be different, if it turns out great you can claim you planned it that way.

Is it possible to make a boat more affordable anymore, budget?...take the word "Custom" out of the term "Custom boat manufacturing", and you will have a solid boat that is affordable and people in the lower to middle class can afford, granted the ride plates and rail kits and maybe even Place diverters will not be on the boat, but still, you are on the water at a fair price and what is a fair price? 10,20, or is it back up to 30K+, is it gonna start looking like it did back in the late 70's with small boat manufacturers poppin up? why not...

Todd you have a great idea. It would be cool to see.
I think it would be tough with todays cost of materials and labor.

I would think the used market is too much competition for a manufacturer to
make it worth it. The price you could get a decent used boat with some custom details already included (rail kits, ride plates) versus the price of a brand new boat.
How many new 18's do Cobra,Ultra, and what ever other manufacturer that
still offer these size boats, sell?

I think if there were a 19' jet/river hot rod with a Mercrusier 454/ berkeley pump package out there for $24,999 ... I think it would sell.

But if you think about it:
    $10k hull
    $4k motor
    $2k pump
    $2k interior
    $4k extras/labor

Might be done ... hmmm, only a couple grand profit, but maybe worth it in today's economy.

SoCal Boat guys (MikeD, Shoemaker) ... what do you think?

I was going to suggest pulling it out of the garage on a bright sunny day and enjoying a cold beer in the seat. You'd be a trailer queen for the day, but you would save gas and certainly be "budget boating".

Guess that's not what you're looking for hu?

Not trying to start a "Budget Boat" company, just curious to see how the reality of boating can stay where it is withoout making the recreational boating industry and optional industry again? not everyone can afford the boats these days, but if they were more affordable i think it would open peoples eyes to the "Maybe" factor...."maybe now we can get into a boat at this price"! granted, it is not a drag boat but its a stock piece that i can have upgraded in the future, wich will bring money to the performance shops later on.
Kinda like the car industry, you buy stock vehicles and almost imediatly, put exaust or headers, or tint, or a tonneau cover,etc.etc.
Like i said, it will prob. never happen, but its something to talk about when the boat is gonna be stuck at home for a while.
I personally think its an idea that should be entertained by this industry though! even trailers could offer a "C" channel trailer and not a high dollar boxframed trailer, definitly less expensive and less to weld. for any possitives i throw out here, im sure we will hear the negatives too.
I think it would be rad to see an 09' bone stock 18' southwind with fresh new gel, but with the classic look, on the market at a boat dealership like they used to have over in Norwalk...dont remember the name of the place, but i remember seeing it as a kid!
I must be getting old and my feelings on "Change" are definitly different now!

as much as i would like to see smaller boats come back, these days it just seams like the only thing the "young crowd" (my age) cares about is looking like a baller. Giant boat, giant stereo, havasu...

I think there could be something there but the problem is like Busby pointed out the cost of a package is roughly $30,000 for a stock boat. I was thinking the same thing though today as I was wandering through a bone yard of molds here in Spokane. The weeds were 3' high and the molds were for large boats of no intrest to me, Sunrunner boats I believe was the manufacturrer. It is sad to see all the work wasting away. I thought about it then remembered passing on the Southwind 18 molds for $200. If I really thought there was a market that could be harnessed I would have gone for it. I just know that I would personally buy an older boat for $5000 and go through it rather than buy the same thing but a 2008 model for $25000. I would like to see new boats again but I am not sure the market is there especially after emissions, AQMD, OSHA and everyone else is involved. Financing and insurance is another issue.

I agree it would be great to get something along those lines out to the public, but with the economy in the dumps, no jobs to be had, (cuz i've been looking) and with the pwc market doing whatever it takes to "make it happen" pretty much kills the Idea. I have always wanted to bring back the smaller boats and think it would be great. In todays world and with the EPA and taxes, labor laws and all the other BS that really did'nt exist back in the good ol day would really put a dampner on the whole deal.
liability has to come to the top. With everyone so sue happy , this takes a front seat in building a recreational vehicle. You get hurt or it hurts someone else, your done... period.

    Now lets look for positives.......

I think it's a great idea todd. Damn, us little boats may even be able to launch at havasu again if we get rid of all the 40' bling rides!
