    Default tach question?

Wanting to go with the hardin gauges and 8k tack. can this tach be ran with a vertex mag internal coil? called all tech reps no one knows! Or does anyone have a 8 k for sale reasonable white one. 3 3/8 or 5 in.

Im not sure about the 8k tach, but my uncle had the hardin 6k tach and it did not work with his vertex. He gave me the hardin and got an autometer.

you need a tach that is built to run specifically with a mag (or get rid of the mag). internals are different for a mag vs normal ignition. if hardin won't tell you it's compatable with a magneto, go with a different brand that will.

Might have to wait after xmas and go with a 5 in pro comp monster on the steering column.

You can run that mag with any tach that's built for a "regular" ignition system with a convertor from Auto Meter and useing suppresion spark plug wires. I think the convertor is Auto Meter #9118... not sure call Auto Meter. Auto Meter makes a tach specificaly for that mag but you still have to run supresion wires with ANY tach with that mag. One guy told me the mag will last the longest with Thundervolt suppresion wires as there is one strand of copper in there, but they are still a suppresion wire.

Most mag repair shops will tell you that those suppression wires are going to eventually kill that magneto, some say sooner some say later. If you decide to go ahead and run a tach, stay with 8 mm wires as even 8.2 mm are a pain in the asss to get inside that cap.

I tried both set-ups, I used the 9118 with a Faria tach and a SunPro tach (I think) and neither were accurate - at all. The Auto Meter 5" tach without the 9118 was the most accurate, but it was only accurate above 2500 RPM.

    Good luck.

when i first got my boat 12 years ago, it had a vertex mag and auto-meter replay tach. a few years later, when i changed the ignition over to msd, i called auto-meter and they said they could convert it over. i sent it back to them, had it back in 10 days looking like a new tach. it's worked fine ever since. auto-meter had great tech support, i imagine they still do.

Thanks im gonna call auto meter tomorrow morning! was looking at the 9117 and 9118 converter. looked at vertex sight and looks like supression wires are a bad idea thanks for the research. All new gauges are a big expense.... thanks

I have one of each if you want to try them. Swappin motors in the boats this winter and the motor with the mag is going in the boat with the autometer tack. Your more than welcome to try them before you buy.

I will box them up and send them out. Just pm me your address. Not using them as there seems to be a little ice issue here.
