    Default Autometer Procomp tach troubles

I searched this forum and online but have seen different answers. What do I have to do to make my Autometer Procomp Tach work with my new MSD Digital 6 Plus box? I know the are two adapters. But I've seen both types recommend as well as it being said I would not need one. The tach worked great off the coil before. Thanks.

I would read your MSD Digital 6 Plus box instructions.I think your tach input wire ( Green sometimes)should plug into the side of the box and not directly to the coil.

    Default Autometer Procomp tach troubles

It was working well off the coil before I installed the box. No previous tach problems. Now I have it wired to the box at the Tach terminal. Nothing. Needle is dead. The tach has a positive lead , a negative ground, and a signal terminal that used to be wired to the neg side of the coil. Now I have it wired from the box tach terminal to the signal terminal at the tach.

Very Hard to trouble shoot electrical over the internet but I will give you some suggestions.

Make sure the tach is getting power. The needle should move a little bit when it powers up. If it doesn't the check the power source and make sure it's good. if it's good then the tach is dead and you should contact Autometer about a repair.

If the needle moves when you power up the tach then move your focus to the signal wire. Make sure 100% there are no breaks in the signal wire at any butt connectors, etc. Regardless of the ignition box, you should be able to get a tach signal of the neg side of the coil. If you can't get a reading off either coil or box then try to hook tach up to another vehicle/boat and see if you can get it to work there.

If the tach still doesn't work on another engine, then the tach is smoked and needs to be repaired or replaced. If it does work on something else, then you may still have an issue with your signal wire.

I hope that helps. Good luck.

You may have shorted out the tach. I had this happen to me. Autometer will rebuild the tach for $25 bucks or less

When i hooked everything up last week the tach responded to the power signal so i knew it was hot, if you're needle does not move with just power (no signal) either its not getting power or its hurt.

My MSD digital marine ready to run distributor has a green wire that goes to the tach.

    Good luck
