    Default Steering Cables

I have a 19ft. Commander that has a stuck steering cable on a Berkley Jet. The helm works fine and I am sure that with a simple lube the cable could be freed up but my question is what is the best way to try to pull the cable from the housing? What type of lube should be on the cable? If that is not feasible, where can I find a complete cable with housing? I know Morse used to be (and may still be the best) I will be working on the boat in Orange County, Ca so if there are any shops out that way can you let me know and what should I expect to pay?

Secondary question, how tight a radius can these cables withstand and still work?

    Thanks,

    Joe

    Joe,
Most likely you will need to replace the cable. Morse is no longer in business but Teleflex makes an aftermarket cable to fit the Morse helm but tends to be more expensive than a whole new kit from teleflex. Here are some links to clarify more-
    Whole kit-

    Replacement cables-

The teleflex cable will not bolt up to the old morse helm unless you get the morse replacement cable. We suggest buying the entire kit. We can get it for you at the lowest price and we ship all over the US. Let me know if you have further questions. Thank you,
    Brian

Cowboy, the less-expensive cables are not always Stainless Steel (I know). It is likely rusted and just so much trash.

A good cable and you can spin the steering with a finger.

    $150 and don't have troubles.

I wouldn't really try this in a 100 mph race boat but on my family boat I was able to take a torch to the steering tube, heat it up a little and it free'd the cable. I then lubed the cable.

What type of jet do you have? I know on mine , i went through a couple of cables in five years..finally re/routed it through the passenger side...only one large sweeping bend..was able to use a 4' shorter cable..and it steers like butter now for 5+years. literally a pinky finger even when underway. I was having a bad kink problem just to the left of the steering wheel.

I pulled the old cables out..and it wasn't that they were dry, it was the bend got stuck permanently int he cable and made it a bitch to steer. Mind you, this is on my cruiser ..not a performance application, but it worked for me. Hope this helps. My jet is a 12je, where the cable exits under water so i was able to do a large J. Bend.

Oh, and when i say cable, i meant that i just replaced the the whole teleflex kit...rack and cable combo.

Yea, the difference in price is small, just get all new parts and forget about it.

The SS is a high-sided cruiser, similar to yours, and most came with E & F pumps (mine has an "F" with the diverter).

The bow is not a lot of use for storage tho, due to a center ski locker (which IS nice IMO) running from dash center to the bow light.

yeah..if you have a tight bend at all then...you should really look into flipping the rack over and running a sweeping bend the other way if you can...i think i had to drill one extra hole...and it worked perfect. I think...though..that you can't use the little helm tightening wing nut though..but who cares i threw it away. somethin to think bout...i just had to notch the interior in one spot where you can't see it..under the engine hatch..

By the way, very nice boat..i've always liked that style..i think tahiti made one too? i just like stuff that's different..and that is different..! LONG LIVE METAL FLAKE
