Clocks were fine. Water was rough for firebird. Wind from multiple directions during the weekend.

Overall it was a great race weekend. Lots of upsets. A few unfortunate crashes. But I haven't had this much fun at a race in years. The new scoop on my boat this morning was epic!!

Congratulations to the winner, but being a little old school, I didn't favor and still don't favor running fuel jets in the Alcohol flat class.

It seems odd running fuel jets in a class designated for flats and reducing the race from 1/4 mile to 1000 feet, both of which favor jets.
I don't mean any disrespect for fuel jets, as I used to enjoy the heck out of watching them when they had their own class.
Recently there has only been two viable classes that were still required to meet specifications and run the best you can. Those were the flats and fuel boats.
The alcohol hydros have dwindled to point of there aren't enough to make a class far to often.
Now even the flat class isn't a pure class.

To bad.

Congrats to the Flying Dutchman crew for winning the TAF class - they did what they needed to do and went rounds. Unfortunately, the way the weekend went for the class as a whole, there's a few QE boats I know of that if turned up could have won the class. It's never cool to see a 6.29 @ 110 win the final round of TAF at the World Finals - I don't care if it's a jet or a flat. And yes, I know he dumped it early when Hart wasn't there in the other lane, just sayin' it was a disappointing weekend for TAF when Tony, Bausher and Ball were all sitting on the trailer during the final..........

Congrats!!!! It's unfortunate that 3 crashed this weekend.. 4 boats total for the weekend is sad.. Glad, so it seems, everyone is going to be ok.. I can't remember the last time 4 boats crashed on the same weekend.. From the videos I've scene, the water conditions weren't the best.. Congrats to all the winners!!!! See you guys in Parker for the opener!!!;)

vince, conditions were fine most of the weekend. Saturday afternoon there was some wind, but we've run down there with much more. was a bit warm Thursday friday and Saturday, but not too terrible. water quality was as bad as I've experienced down there in a lot of years. just sucked the life out of ya. can't help but believe that had an effect on the flats...

Outta curiosity......what is a typical hp match up for a jet vs v-drive at this.
Is it fairly level....more stacked tword the jet boys??? or vs versa
I am not gonna claim to be an expert on the sport....but I am guessing the crowd liked the fact there were more races to watch.

this is jet vs flat. not comparing anything to a hydro.

the engine's are brad 8s or similar. they can be tuned to a lot of different hp levels. it seems like it's more about what the setup can handle, rather than how much hp either can make. as far as the pirates, they are not even remotely "turned up" to run 5.70s. this was only the 2nd race they've competed in, and they're still working on refining the setup. the fact that Ronnie didn't beat himself, and that they were able to (pretty much) consistently run it down the track all day with not great but decent numbers got them into the winners circle. just how it goes sometimes.

when they get it to the point they can turn it up some, it'll definitely open some eyes. and just for comparison, awesome toy ran a 5.38 at dexter in august. with a 30 year old 499" keith black deal. not quite the same as a brad 8. these things are just getting started...

Sorry not trying to be a hater just hard for me to get excited about something that wouldn't normally happen.

To answer the last post IMO it usually takes more power to run a jet the same number
As a prop driven boat but the jets have come along way and that difference is getting smaller and smaller year after year. Mike Miller is proving that in his pgj !

BP nailed it right on the money... Dutchman is not even trying yet and taking baby steps which is AWESOME. Some timing in the Brad alone would completely change the numbers. If I recall correctly, they ran a 5.70, 74,75,.8x for its full runs. The only thing that broke the consistency was a fuel line whoops. Can't wait to watch the capsule jets progress next year!

Evidently a fuel line spraying alky into the Mag isn't a recipe for speed!

I'll admit that I am a flat bottom guy through and through but if combining jets and flats in a professional class increases boat counts and spectator interest then I'm all for it. I think the whole jet vs flat debate helps to generate excitement and hopefully encourages fans of both to come out and pull for their side. Hell it might even convert a few spectators into participants.

Drag boat racing today is much different today than the one a lot of us grew up and raced in during the 70's - 80's, we have to be willing to try and embrace new ideas to keep this sport we love alive.

Jets verse's Flats

Being that I'm an old school racer I think that the brackets are not my cup of tea BUT when it comes to mixing the boats up to race each other it's really good for the sport. Look at QE you have Flats, Hydro's and Jet's all competing on the same playing field and if you were to sit in the stands you would see how the fans really enjoy the racing. Every spectator can pick there favorite and may the best boat win. You are also able to see the advantages of each hull design. When you have a jet boat going thru the light at 115.00 mph and you have a hydro coming up on you at a 145.00 mph it really make's it more exciting. For year's SDBA has had the BFJ'S racing the TAF'S and has always been a crowd pleaser. I was able to compete with Morris Moore's Head Hunter with a blown alcohol Jet against the TAF all thru the SDBA circuit and it was not only a lot of fun but was a tremendous crowd pleaser!!!!!

top fuel jet boats

Awesome to see some top fuel jet boats back in the mix!
Nice boat for sure!
I miss the good old days when we had 8-10 boats running that class.
I will have to dig out my old records from 1995
My last pass on alcohol was a 6:93 ET @ 163.25MPH 1/4 mile
Unfortunately I couldn't land it after the finish line!

It was FREAKIN AWESOME :)devil I hate to see all the crashes, but glad everybody walked away, even though they were in capsules there was some pretty violent crashes. There were alot of close races and several championships decided at the finals, Dont get much better than that !!! I got to crew on the 405 and really had a great time hangin with Kjell and Jeff, those guys are really on top of there game.. Every time I get to help Kjell I really learn alot of things that I can do in my program that will help me, Kjell thank you for that :))THumbsUp . I'm still not sure if I'll be takin the 321 boat to Firebird but who knows, that is sum shit water !!!!! It was great to put sum names with faces and always enjoy meeting new people and can you believe the 418 even blew the dust off his boat and made a great showing :wink2: And when a jet boat can win TAF that just puts the icing on the cake, congrats to all the guys involved in that TFJ program !!!!!!

See you guys next year :partyguy:

Been a long time....

Did you get a message a few months ago from a couple of your guys that some nut boat racer stopped them in a chicken place in Marlin, Texas and asked about you?

I saw a pickup pull in front of me with your company name on it and so I turned around and asked if it was the same Young Brothers that I knew...

The SDBA is celebrating 40 years at the banquet in February... would be great to see you guys. Message me if you want some info....

Everybody running straight alcohol on the jets?
I thought I outsmarted everybody back in the 90's running alcohol versus 50% nitro?
We came to the conclusion that we could get the boat hooked up earlier out of the gate and get to the finish line first before the boats running nitro could get hooked up (it worked most of the time).
We ran a place diverter so we could keep the nose down out of the gate which really helped on cutting good lights.
Did I hear that a few of the old jet boat owners might be putting some boats together? Ralf Mills , Donnie Lebond (might be off on the last name)
