Default Should I Buy This Boat? 1975 Taylor SS

$1200. This boat is 2 hours from me and would be a badass project. Do you guys think it's worth getting. I would be buying with the intent to be a project. From what i read and can see, doesn't seem like to bad of a deal. I want your two cents! Sorry for not being on here for awhile Merry xmas!

1975 18 ft,455 w/hardin marine thru hull exhaust .berkley jet pump, needs seal on shaft, metalflake blue and silver.white and blue interior.new steering cable. edelbrock carb, comp cam 280-490.this was 3rd time on the water and suddenly it agressively blew oil out of the valvecover breather cap,i don't have time to dig into it to find out what happened ,i'm curious as to what happened, must sell,no trades.

If you like the design of the boat, go into the project with open eyes. It has an unknown engine problem, figure you may have to rebuild it. The interior looks like it is weathered, as does the gel coat. He also states that the pump needs a seal, have to wonder if it needs more. The single axle trailer is not a real desirable item either.

Depending on the price and your budget(and how badly you want a Taylor), you may be better off finding a different boat.

455 Oldsmobile's were notorious for oiling issues. I'm no expert but what I recall is that the factory oil return galleys aren't large enough to return the upper end oil back to the pan and pump. I've seen some added, external oil lines run in order to get the oil back where it needs to be.

Use the internet as your friend and research the issue. Search words like olds 455 oiling issues will bring tons of info to you.

The sellers description of what happened sounds right for a 455 that's been run too long at high RPMs.

Good luck but the Olds has become the least desirable jet motor. Pretty much goes Chevy, Ford, Olds them AMC in that order.

Just for comparison, I have a '70 Wreidt Stinger 16'6", Olds Berkely all running nicely, on a single axle trailer. Has new aluminum tanks and for sale at $1,700.00 no work needed.

I think that you can do better.

Give him $500 for the trailer and tell him that you'll haul the boat off for free.

There's nothing more expensive than a "free/cheap" boat. Projects nearly always end up way more expensive and take way longer than expected over buying turn key. The advantage of a project is you get to build it your way....assuming you have the $$, experience and time to devote to it. Turn key gets you on the water now and will usually be less expensive usually by a lot. There's a lot of nice boats available in any price range. Good luck.

Just wanted to add to what has been said, be sure there is a valid title for the trailer. Your info says you're from PA and you will have an impossible time trying to get plates and title without an existing valid title. If you live right on the river in Brady you can probably get away with it for a quick trip to the ramp! Fish and Game is easy to get the boat licensed without a title.

I have the same boat, understand that you better love the hull because projects are expensive as hell. In the long run u can build ur way and easily spend 10-15 k. Or u can buy turn key, pick ur poison.
