Default Notice to Dealers of MSD Products

Just received this notice from MSD. This will allow dealers to price MSD products where they like. Should see some price drops from some of the big distributors.

    December 22, 2008
Dear MSD Warehouse Distributors and Authorized Dealers:

In April 2007, MSD introduced the Maximum Value Program (MVP), a unilateral pricing program intended to ensure pricing integrity on the MSD product line. Over the last year and a half, we feel the MVP program has done what we intended.

The current economic climate, the kind of which we have never faced before, has dramatically slowed consumer spending. Consequently, we feel that the pricing regulations of the MVP program are now limiting our jobbers and retailers from promoting and doing whatever it takes to get the sale. In this economic climate, that is simply not acceptable.

After much deliberation, MSD Ignition has made the decision to temporarily suspend the pricing regulations and allow our Authorized Dealers to react to the economic downturn. Our Authorized Dealers may now set the retail price for MSD products and can promote and sell without pricing restriction. All remaining provisions of the MVP agreement remain unchanged and in full force and effect. I believe this will stimulate sales of all MSD products and aid all of us in weathering this economic cycle. This policy change goes into effect on December 23, 2008 and will stay in place until further notification. Also, prior to the time we re-implement the pricing regulations, we will give plenty of notice so that Authorized Dealers can change their advertising, price lists and promotional materials. Please feel free to call Fred Petrivelli or myself if you have any questions.
    Sincerely,

    Russell Stephens
    President

That should help wipe out any remaining "mom and pop" shops. Does Wal Mart carry MSD yet?

Good news because #1 its good stuff (and we have always liked it ) and IMO they were esentially "price fixing" before .We for example had to agree (in writing) to sell at a prescribed price or face the possibility of losing the ability to sell the product . As was pedictable the market "took care of itself" , Summit started thier own line etc ,we for example started re-evaluating and trying some of the other ignition products available to us ,eg Crane, Mallory,Petronics, etc ,I,m sure this was "market driven" and will be curious to see how it "shakes out" for MSD in the future Tom [/B]

BTW check out the new "Petronics Marine line" very nice ! Jurys still out on the field performance!

I think that this did have a lot to do with others coming out with a comparible line for less. I still use MSD and will continue to (as long as they are in business). I do hope that these performance companies are able to wether the storm and keep what jobs they have in the USA. MSD is one company where many jet boaters do spend money on buying new vs. Headers, pumps and many other marine specific parts that many buy from e-bay others etc, which does not keep the manufacturers in business.

I knew that the price fixing would not last to long.It hurts sales and competion. I got a good deal at San Diego Speed and Marine. The prices on the MSD truck were to high.

Thats a bunch of crap if you ask me! MSD just cut there retailers profit margins in half and hung them out to dry. Sounds like a last ditch effort to boost sales for MSD, and MSD only. Now people are gonna go to there local speed shop, waste the sales staffs time asking questions and "shopping" for the best price, then theyre gonna get online and order it from some website that can sell it for 2% profit cause they have no overhead.

In my opinion.....not thay anyone cares......MSD should lower its pricing to the retailers, and lower the MVP pricing an equal amount, that way the entire burdon of this is not on the retail store thats trying to keep its head above water right now!! This economy sucks!

This is true. They should have taken a little hit not just pass the proffit loss on to their dealers. Fortunately, some of the dealers are also the installers and still make some money even if the mark up on the prodict is not as high. As long as these guys are able to feed their families, (GS, SDPM, JBPM etc.)

I know you guys think these are stupid, but this angle of the motor I have not seen, the bottom were "moroso" is, why does that silver thing slant up? What's that silver and bronze piece that's next to the red bar on the right, where the moroso slants up?

The silver and bronze piece is the mechanical fuel pump and the slanty thingy is the oil pan where in this particular one is slanting down to the sump where the oil is picked up and pumped into the motor. Many jet boats as well as v drives have oil ppans that are flat across the bottom so the pan can hold more oil giving more volume to lubricate and cool the motor parts.

JSM Jim, you do have to excuse some of these guys on here for being suspicious. Many of us came on here and never posted questions or answers until we lurked for some time and learned a few things by reading others threads. We do welcome new comers and do want to help. There have been a few $#it stirrers lately and false screen names so everyone is a little leary.

Where is HJ speaking of newbie questions. Patrick, you are the new embasador for new guys. It is your job to field these questions and leave the set up and technical questions to the pannel. lol.

    Jim, welcome to the boards.
