    Default 1985 cole

Hi everyone I'm new to this site it looks good. I just got a 1985 19 ft. cole with a hardin 454 ci, 330 hp berk pump jg dont know what impeller size is. The boat on gps go's 52 mph @ 3900 rpm. I think it should do better. Any thoughts would be great.

    Hi Dave,
I'm not the expert here, there are a few here that definitely are the experts.

But I would say that is pretty good MPH for a stock marine motor.
The impeller chart I am looking at however suggests that you are making less HP than you think.

    Is the motor tired?

300 HP should be turning an A at around 4500RPM, I think.

    Welcome!

In a 19ft boat with a stock 454 you should be able to turn more like 5000rpms plus. It sounds to me like you might have a AA impellor. My 18 1/2 ft jetboat with a stock 454 ran 64 with a A impellor and a fresh pump.

I think the motor is strong it pulls hard from 0-52. It has the old cast intake, maybe I should change that. I think 60 or so mph would be right.

Im kind of in the same boat (pardon the pun). Same 454 on a 89 carrera eclipse with a berk A. I have an old cast manifold with a 750 holley. Im looking at some new intake as well. I've considered a tunnel ram but many have said that a new aluminum duel plane manifold will be just as good. Let me know what you do and what it gets you.

IMO, a stock BBC, 52mph is about right, regardless of RPM's reached.

Swapping intakes on a stock motor probably won't do you much good. I went that route years ago. Swapped a really crappy intake for a really good one and gained zilch......nada........nutten.

On a good note, the next season when my motor was rebuilt for 500 hp that intake I replaced the old one with worked great.

Check all the usual suspects and make sure that everything is working properly on your setup.

Check the carb and make sure the secondaries are opening all the way. Very common problem on older vac sec carbs. The diaphragms will dry out, crack, or otherwise cease to function and the secondaries won't open. Have a pal check to make sure they're opening when you gas it hard (carefully).

Make sure you've got a good tune. Spark plugs, wires, distributor cap, rotor cap etc.

All this stuff is cheap and a good place to start before you go buying expensive parts like intakes.

    Oh yeah..........IMO

Personally I think 3900 rpm is really low, no matter what the speed. My old stock 460 Ford would turn an Aggressor AA impeller to 4600 rpm. Since we all know Chevys are better than Fords...............

From the looks of your numbers, I would get a GPS for speed and an extra tachometer hooked up and verify that your numbers are actually correct before I started chasing my tail. If they are, we can help you from there.

X 2 on the tach, try a known good one, and a GPS is a great tuning aid for jet boats.

Still with a new tach isnt going to get you to the 60mph range. I would start with a new impellor, diverter, tach, intake and carb, and exhaust.
Go with a duel plane Edelbrock and a holley 750 with vacumm seconds. Im assuming you have log exhaust. That should be the first to go.

Im not sayn this is the right way to go. But it worked for me. I know I had a 18 1/2 but thats not a big difference. I had full interior, and it was heavy.

No, the new tach will not get you to 60 mph. But it WILL help you decide what direction to take when you have the correct information to start with. Just makes things a lot easier and more economical than to just start throwing parts at it.

    I have a 2002 Carrera 20.5 Elite with a 390hp Marine power 454 with a A/B aggressor impeller it will turn 4600rpm. It has a 800cfm Holley carb.

Duane is right the numbers don't look right. If you don't have a spare tach pull yours out and take it to and auto electric shop to have it verified, it's usually pretty cheap to do. ALong with checking the carb, check to make sure you dist is advancing properly and the timming is set correctly.
