Default I dont know anything but you guys do...454 question

Hello everyone...since I bought my 89 Carrera Eclipse I have been learning a lot from the experience in this forum. This is my first boat and my first real toy so I dont know much about anything. I have a 454 BBC all hardin Marined out and I would like to juice it up a little. It has a casting number of "14015545" which could be a 4 bolt or a 2 bolt main. Would it be safe to assume that it is a 4 bolt since this is a Marine engine? Im running it with a berk A and a holley 715 cfm Marine Carb. What kind of performance should I expect from this and where should I start to put some HP in it? I would like to get her up to the mid 70's mph if its possible. I am a man on a budget so I am making new seats myself...Ill post pictures when I get a card reader

I appreciate any help I can get,
    Thank you all

you didnt give enough useful information for anybody to help you. how about

-what do you intend o do with this boat (chase mph, ski/cruise etc)

    -budget

    -cylinder head casting numbers

    -what intake do you have?

-how many rpms you turning now

    - how fast is the boat now

if you start building hp, keep in mind "Fast, reliable, cheap - Pick two"
how fast can you afford to go?

the sum of the whole is greater than one individual part, so it doesnt take very long to end up with a boatload of money in these things. nitrous is the cheapest horsepower youll find

well thats the thing...I dont know what I have, I have limited knowledge of motors. the only numbers I was able to find on the heads was "h2c97978" and when I tried to google them I got nothing. I was only able to find a little on my intake "333841". the Main thing I want to know if there is a better way to find out if I have two or four bolt main without having to rip it open.

I picked up some rewarder TT and Im looking into a tunnel ram but I dont want to get one till I know if my motor will be able to utilize it.

take off your valve cover and get the numbers from the head under the valve cover and go to www.mortec.com and check out the listing. as far as the 4 bolt block there is a way of telling what it is by looking by the oil filter housing i have been told but the old mind of mine forget what it was

2 bolt 4 bolt, it does not matter. If you blow off the caps in a 2 olt you had a catastrophic failure and would have ruined your motor one way or the other.I just ruined the 4 bolt in my truck by spinning bearings and broke the crank.

If you want a tunnel ram you may need to see what your compression is then install a cam that will deliver the max HP at the taget rpm of your pump/ impeller combo.

The only CERTAIN wat to tell 4-bolt or 2 is to pull the pan and eyeball the contents.

If the motor is an '89, likely a Gen 5 (can't remember when those started).

    If it has a Mech fuel pump, it's A Mk-IV (no provision on a Gen 5), and a toss-up.
    My 1978 Hardin Marine 454, is a 2-bolt.

Real important is what heads you have. Small ovals (truck/peanut) heads don't breathe well above 4-grand or so, and are not a good fit. For moderately modded motors abnd below, the hot ticket is the large oval heads, which, unfortunately, tend to have the small (2.06/1.72") valves, and deserve the bigger ones. The rectangle port heads are usually too big intake-runner-wise for the smaller (like a 454 is small, LOL, relatively, it is these days) motors untill thoroughly built up.

Might as well start the firestorm and say that the TR will certainly allow you tu burn a lot more gas, and it looks pretty, but, you can, especially on a non-top-level-build engine, make more, and more usable power, with a single 4-barrell. It just looses the bling speed.

Unless you're gonna run a blower, I wouldnt worry about it having "only" 2 bolts and a cast crank...

We prob have the same engine.... Pushes my 20.5 Elite to 55 with peanut ports and 2-bolt.

Are you running headers or logs?
    What's the speed now?
    Stock intake manifold?

I have a complete cam kit that might fit nicely with your package with a Good Air-Gap manifold and 750 cfm... its from a motor with break in time only... Cam, springs, lifters etc etc... I'll PM you.
