    Default Need some BBC advise

Turns out my motor isnt going to win any races but I would like to give it a little extra push until I can afford to put some real money into it. It is a 89 Hardin 454 BBC

    ACCORDING TO MORTEC

14015445...454.......78-90...2 or 4 bolt main (I dont know which)

    ----------
    353039.....454...cast (Crankshaft)
    ----------
    14092360...86-90...oval...OPEN...454 Truck, "peanut" round ports

    manifold: 333841
Holley 715cfm list 9049 Marine Carb

apparently the heads start to choke at around 4500 RPM. If I were to replace the heads which should I get and if not should I bother putting a new intake manifold on it.

I would like to get the 454 into at least the 400's HP and right now I'm assuming its 325hp. I already have some rewarder TT headers.

    Any advise would be appreciated

The best way to improve IMO is to get new better flowing heads. Get some 990's or 045's. You can find some here on PB fairly easily. Go to a different intake and a 750 carb. Change the cam. You already got the headers. That is about all you can do, besides a tunnel ram, without tearing the whole thing down. You can go with some nitrous but with the cast crank you wouldn't be able to get too crazy with it. Maybe a 100 shot and use sparingly. If you don't already have them a droop snoot and a diverter will help get ass out of the water for speed. There are a few really nice powerplants in the spam section that you could make work. It really all depends on what you are lloking to accomplish and how much green you have to spend! Just my $.02.

    What boat are you running?

That sounds awfully expensive. What if I dont want to spring for the heads right now. would a decent dual plane manifold at least be worth the money?

A 89 Carrera Eclipse with a Berk JG-A, No drop snoot but I do have a place diverter

That was the exact same motor I had. Look at the larger Oval Port heads (049 or 781). I got bit by the BBC bug and bored it out .60 over, decked the block, changed out the cam, went to a new manifold, and worked 750 cfm carb. You should first do a leak down test on the motor to make sure it has good compression. If not, everything else you want to do will be for not. Also, how is the pump? It should be checked out. All the HP in the world won't help out a worn pump.

Just my opinion, but maybe it's time for the government to take down the bird feeder!

yes, a good dual plane manif would be a good idea...Edelbrock Performer RPM Air Gap is the best out there ...there's a oval port for sale on www. Racingjunk.com under intake manif & carbs for cheap...also...i would get ahold of cstraub (he grinds cams) on the boards for a cam selection with what u have now...the holley 715cfm will work just fine with a few mods...talk to Smokinlowrider or Ol Guy...they can help with carb ...just my .02 cents

    Default Where?

    WHERE?

It is really difficult to try to help you without knowing WHERE you are. I can hook you up with heads and an intake that should wake up what you already have, but before I even start I need to know if location will be a stumbling block. It is easy to put your hometown/area next to your avatar. If you're local to the areas I travel in we can talk about cost and "bang for the buck" engineering...........Ray

You are real close to Obnoxious from the boards here. He is in San Dimas. He is another one to ask some questions from. Barry is a great guy to talk to.
