First boat, First Project.... long ways to go. 1972 Rogers

    Cool First boat, First Project.... long ways to go. Pre 72 Rogers...

    Picking this up from my cousin very soon. Needs some work and basically all mechanical systems. Has been garage kept and he has already replaced the stringers. Still need to finish replacing the floor and than move onto the paint. The hull is very solid and in good condition, but the paint isn't. It has been painted a few different times and will be the main focus for the fall and winter. He has already removed all the hardware and replaced the stringers. The blue is the original paint from what we can tell. Need to finish the floor and interior. Seats are rough but at least we have them to build the new frames off of. My cousin has a few spare parts from his other boats, we just need to get together and figure out what will work for this one. Current plan is a 454 BBC.

    I have a pretty good idea of what I want to do paint and color wise, but for now, here are the pics of her as she currently sits.










    This will be the colors (or close to) I will be going with for the boat. Primary will be green with blue being the secondary color and the silver being the pinstriping/highlights. I know it may not be everyones first choice, but its what I like and I think it will be different.





    Anyway, I just wanted to stop in and say hi and show you the project. Im looking forward to learn new info on these boats and to get the project rolling!

    welcome to the boards and to your new addiction.....boats. haha looks like a good platform for a first build. I too like those colors and should look great on that hulls shape. It's kinda hard to tell for sure from those pics but I'm not so sure that's a rogers hull. A couple things I see that raise the questions is the quarter stringers, the hard/squared cap line appears to carry all the way back to the transom as opposed to being rounded or barrel shaped at the transom and the lifting strake carrying all the way forward to the keel/bow eye area. Regardless, it has nice shape, lines and looks like a fun project that should provide a lot of good times in the future for ya. I look forward to seeing you progress with it.

    This has also been a question I have had. Im not to familiar with these boats yet, but the cap line, I agree, Just doesn't seem to match. I have tried to locate the HID on the transom, but have been unsuccessful. With the numerous layers of paint, it has either been filled in, or sanded out... Im hoping when I start removing the old paint that I will come across it.

    Also,.. maybe a noob question, but.. lifting strake?

    No HINs in 1972. Well, not before November '72 so that means almost no boats built in that year had them.
    You boat Looks like one Rogers dads boats, a Weiman. They were built by Tahiti who also offered the same hull as well as Cutlass and few others.

    Looking at the pic, I don't think it's a Weiman either. The rear 1/4's aren't round enough, and the top of the rear deck slopes all the way to the rear of the boat. Weimans have the side combings wrap all the way around the cockpit. (Other than across the dash).

    With the short stringers, and the rear deck, I think it could be a Tahiti. There were tons of em made. How long is this boat? Those seats are pretty short for an 18 footer. If it's a 16, I'm definitely going with Tahiti. If Dick Weiman did a 16, I'm not aware of it.

    Also, its a 72.AFAIK, No Weimans after the divorce in 70-ish.

    Yeah, I'm definitely on the band wagon that it is not a rogers as well now. The boat will be in my possession later this week and I can get some better pictures, as well as measurements. The year is just a guess... turns out previous owner obtained a title for it in a .. cough cough.. back alley transaction.. and that title is for a '72 Rogers 17'. So,.. it could be older.. or it could be newer. I do know that areas of the deck and cockpit sides have wood under the fiberglass,.. if that helps any..

    I do know there is no hull id, nor any sort of identification plates anywhere on it. I'm not going to use the title, but instead try to pursue getting it registered in a different way.. jut not sure what that way is.

    Still,.. the hull is solid and i'm getting it for a great deal, so i'm going to continue with it, regardless of what it is.. but it would be nice to know for sure.

    I've been thinking about your hull for a few days now and it FINALLY dawned on me what you have, it is a Rogers. A few years ago a member on this site bought a Rogers like yours and then another one popped up about the same time. In all the years I worked for Roger he never mentioned building this hull with the short stringers and the fade away rear deck like yours has. Anyway here's a link to the same hull as yours, it took me a while to find it but I haven't found the other thread...yet.
    You can see the HIN in the transom on his boat dating to December 1972.

    Wow, that is crazy. Even crazier that nothing is known about them, nor is there any info and possibly less than a handful out there. If, in fact this is what I have, it makes me want to restore it to it's splendor even more. If you come up with any other information, I would love to hear it. crazy to think about this boats journey and how it ended up on the east coast from CA...

    old rigger... could the other one you were thinking of have been the one on pages 6 and 7 of the roger... rip thread? Sure does look extremely similar. If so. Those are the only other ones that looks like mine I have been able to locate anywhere...

    Slow going, but I did pick up a 12JG pump, u-joint assembly, and transom housing for free the other day.

    Pump is going to need rebuilt and need a new impeller, but it was free, so i guess thats better than new. Pump housing and shaft are in good condition.






    I see where Berkeley has a complete rebuild kit with impeller on their site for around $470. Is this the best place / route to go for a rebuild?

    nice score on the pump and parts, that helps the build cost a bunch. Of course since you got it for free you can throw a bunch of money at it on extra upgrades now. haha You may want to wait on impeller selection until you decide what motor build your going to be doing (rpm range/power band) If your not familiar with jet pump repair/building you can get a Seloc repair manual to help you as good reference. Also a couple specific tools will make the dis-assembly/re-assembly process much easier. Specifically a good impeller puller. Nice to know it is in fact a Rogers and a rather rare one to boot. It's always cool to have a nice, rare hot rod around. How's the paint stripping going?

    Thanks. I had planned on holding off on the impellar decision until the motor got dyno'd. I know big blocks are the choice, but I am planning on going the 383 sbc route. Decided on this for two main reasons, cost will be a little easier to handle than bbc, plus the little bit of wait savings should be a plus on this smaller size boat i would think. Reading through the small block thread, i feel very confident that this route can produce a fun little weekend river cruiser.

    As far as the paint stripping goes... well... i still dont have the boat! The garage it is currently in is a storage garage for a contractor. He has a big snow plow parked in fron of it that goes on a bobcat... well.. the bobcat is currently torn apart. We attempted to slide the plow out of the way, but being on a gravel surface.. that didnt happen. So.. yeah,.. im still waiting...

    I am pretty stoked that this is a rarely seen hull from rogers. I have only seen about 3 other ones online through about 7-9 hours of researching. While it is cool, it also sucks because there is zip, zero, information about them...

    Well, while I wait on machinery to be moved from the garage where the boat is stored, I figured I will at least get the motor build started. I am planning on going SBC and going with the 383 stroker route. After looking around my area, I have come across a good deal on not one, but two bare 350 blocks. One is a 4 bolt main 3970010 block, and the other is a 2 bolt main 3970014 block. I am getting both of them as a package deal for $200, which is pretty reasonable for this area. Right now I am leaning strongly to using the 4 bolt main block for the 383 build and than, eventually, just building the other block as a 350 as a spare. My cousin is doing the machining on the blocks for me and I am currently looking into pistons and have narrowed it down to DSS or KB.

    I will post pics of the blocks tonight once i get home.

    Have engines! I was wrong though, they are both 2-bolt, but since I am not planning on running crazy HP numbers, im not really worried.









    Now time to decide which one will be getting torn down and sent to machine shop to become the 383 that i will use. I will keep the other one and just build a running 350 out of it to keep as a spare.. either for myself,.. or cousins boat.. lol
