Im looking at buying another jet boat. I currently have a 1977 sunkist and its not too family friendly but I just found a 20 footer that looks to be very family friendly. The issue is the amc 401 motor that was in it went bad and was disassembled and left out. I dont want to use the 401, it most likely needs a lot of work to run again, and would rather put a vortec 350 converted to carb in. I can build mounts for it but I will need to find manifolds and figure out how to hook up the motor to the pump. Any help on what all I will need to do would be greatly appreciated. Ill post up some pics of the boat in a bit.
Easy enough to do, for the driveline all you should need is the PTO that will bolt to the Chevy engine and then the driveshaft that is there should bolt to that, unless it's one that was made to bolt directly to the AMC crank. If that's the case then you'll need a driveshaft also. They are easy to find, they pop up in the classifieds all the time. As for exhaust, that too will show up used, depending on what you want, although small block stuff is not as common as big block stuff is, so comes around less often. If your keeping the hatch you could use a set of Mercruiser or Volvo exhaust manifolds/risers, that stuff is really common and inexpensive used, but it's also iron and heavy. I'd just give Tom at Jet Boat Performance a call, he'll have everything you need for a one stop shopping experience.
If the 401 cylinders aren't rusty you'll be able to sell the engine, Jeep folks always looking for those.
The boat probably came with a 360 AMC and upgraded to a 401. Believe it or not that that is a great engine and made a good amount of power and are very reliable I have owned two boats with that engine package one with a Jacuzzi Y and one with a Panther. The 360 Panther I ran the piss out of that boat and no issues ever!
I wouldnt mind sticking with the 401 if I could find a good one for sale locally. This one would need a good amount of work to be back in running condition again, probably cost double what I can pick up a good running 454 for.
so what would be a good price on a boat like this one. It needs the carpet replaced, comes with new carpet though, all wood for seats needed replaced and all but front back rests have been done and look good, and the motor situation needs to be figured out. All and all the boat appears to be very solid from the inspection I did. I think I can pick it up pretty cheap just dont want to pay too much if I can help it. I figure I will have to put around 100 hours into getting everything done and then the cost of the motor and misc parts. I work on lots of cars in my free time and my other jet boat so working on them isnt the issue, knowing all the details prior to starting however is my issue.
