Default Pump loads one time... not the next?

18 ft baja, 454, berkely pump. The pump randomly wont load from an idle, when it does it runs great, the next time from idle it just spins. any ideas? Pump was supposedly just rebuilt before I got the boat.

Prima jet. Not so sure that's his problem though. If the boat has been in the water and run already, then it does this........it doesn't seem likely that it would/could have air trapped in the bowl.

If it does it only after getting it off the trailer and running it for the first time, then that's pretty normal and this lil dude should help.

Just back it into the water w/ the reverse gate open every time......wait till it loads....then go. No big deal and no reason to throw $$$ at it.

sucking air through the mechanical seal maybe? if the rope seal was replaced
broken keyway? although there would be other issues related to this one.

I had a crimped hand hole cover o-ring that was letting air into the pump that caused a pretty poor hole shot. The motor would spin up pretty high and then drop down but it did it all the time.

Thanks for all the ideas!!! It happens randomly on the lake. No crap in the hand hole, no restrictions on the intake grate,

Are you standing real hard on it when this happens, or just trying to take off normal?

I have a pretty good leak when the boat is running, tightening the rope seal down a lil (Like a quarter turn) stopped it, would this help in cavitation also...pulling air through the rope seal?
