    Default impeller install issue.

So i go to put my stuff back together last night and there is something that is bugging me and i need some advise....

When i removed my impeller there were no shims in there for spacing. I had my impeller turned and got a properly sized wear ring for it. When i installed the impeller it woud not slide any farther back and where there should be the gap of .035 or what ever its supposed to be i have about a 8th of an inch.i have hand turned the motor and nothing is scraping or snagging so i didnt know if this was going to be an issue.

Suction housing is a JF and bowl is a JE (Not sure if the suction housing changes from JE to JF so i listed the info). the impeller is a alum B. I tightend down that impeller nut to 80 pounds as per the instructions.

Taking this bad boy back apart to reseat everything is in no way an issue so if thats what is required im ok with that.

Take it apart and shim. you need about .020 more or so. I usually shim to .030-.035. Anywhere in theat range and I am happy.

Did you change the wear ring? If so, did you remove a shouldered ring and install a non shouldered ring?

Maybe your machinist got a little excited and machined off the front of the impeller?

but thats what im saying.. I cant get this mother to go any farther in. The wear ring is snugged right up to the lip of the plastic sleave so unless the lip on that sleeve should not be there im at a loss as to why this wont go in any farther.

I had duane detail the impeller and Tom matched the new wear ring to the impeller at his shop. Im no expert but I trust 150% tom matched it up properly and duane did not take anything off he should not have.

EDIT. now could have someone before me removed something off that impeller who the hell knows!!!

can you post pictures of the before and after wear rings to narrow down the problem area. if i am reading this right, sounds like you had a shouldered ring and replaced it with a non shouldered ring to end up with the excessive clearance?

Sean if I'm reading this right , your impeller wear skirt forward edge surface is not engaging the wear ring enough? (view through cleanout) I'm on the road for a while this AM call my cell I'll help you sort it out Tom

Old wear ring is scrap metal by now somewhere... But I held both the old wear ring and new wear ring in my hand and besides the actual size they where identical in shape...

However im going thru all my pictures to double check i dont have a shot of it..

another variable, is the impellor seated on the shaft collar? possible the key has slid forward in the keyway and holding impellor back.

If that key is not all the way forward could it prevent the impeller from going all the way it? That is something I dont remember looking at...

its not that it is not forward, it may be too forward. it will sometimes slide up the ramp of the keyway slot and act as a wedge or ramp preventing the impellor from seating on the shaft collar.

just look through the clean out and see that the face of the hub of the impeller is up against the shaft shoulder, if so its something else.
