    Default Lake Ming Construction Update

Went out to Ming today to see what it looks like. As you can see in the photos, it's not quite done, probably the better part of 2 months left to completion. I spoke with the framers doing the new bathrooms and looked at his plans. Next week or so they will build coffer dams across the small channels that lead from the boat ramp out to the main lake, pump out the water, dredge and re-grade it, change the boat ramps and install a new dock on either side of the ramp. Framer told me the County got more money than they had planned on so they're doing phase 2 of this project concurrent with phase 1. Hopefully it'll be done in time for NJBA and APBA races in May.

This is the ramp area @ the East end of the lake.

West end ramp and bathroom area.

PS- The plans the framer had showed the island being all grass and trees, looked like the shack that's there is supposed to be coming down.

    Default 2pm yesterday...

musta just missed you... we stopped by on the way back, and i took about 40 pics. you got some good one's of the area around the front gate/safety ramp...

looking the other way (up the road toward the staging lanes), the road is fenced off and appears to be left alone. the restroom is still there, as was the playground.

looking around that area, it -looks- like all the curbing is done, and the parking lot area is graded, waiting to be cleaned up a little, filled/blacktopped.

on the dirt road between jetboat alley and the east ramp area, there were some piles of dirt, and these 4 new docks, which are all i saw out there.

this is the curb/ramp between jetboat alley and the dirt road going east. again, looks like all the new curbing that's going to be done, has been completed. didn't see any signs of trenching, or forms being constructed.

this is looking back down jetboat alley. the fence is apparently as far as they're going with repaving.

this is looking back toward the ramp. notice, the grading is approximately 6" below the edge of the ramp.

this is looking at the ramp, from the corner of the entrance to the cove.

although they may have ideas of doing something with the island, there was no sign that any activity had taken place out there. like i mentioned, it was 2pm, and the only people working out there were the 2 guys on the new head. as the pics show, nothing's been done with the old junk docks yet either. there were several people around the lake fishing from the banks.

the water was as high as i've ever seen it. didn't go check the overflow, but it had to be up to it.

if they can finish the restroom, get the lots paved and get the fences down, it -could- be usable. but without anybody working on the grading/paving, hard to say how well things are progressing.

the parking lot across the street had several big piles of dirt, and grass from the lake.

I must have just missed both of you, I went through there around 4pm on Tuesday. Just stopped by on our way back from LA. Could not believe I drove to Lake Elsinore over the weekend and on our way back my wife reminded me we had to drive right back down to So Cal on Tuesday.

    Default Shit!

I talked to a buddy of mine that's a ranger here, his beat is Ming, he's been transferred to Buena Vista until at least mid June as the construction @ Ming will NOT be done until then. I see that NJBA has already scratched April, what about May & June? There is another venue up here, but it would take someone official talking to the county.

Let me know if I can help in anyway.

Or another location, I am sure there are a few places that are a little more affordable in this economy

We were told this weekend that the May APBA race is also cancelled.

I know that my paving crew could have that place from that stage to paved and done in about a week. 6" seems a little high at te ramps unless that soil has an amazing R value (better than Base) or perhaps they are going with a very thick asphalt section. Of course with the bids I have seen being turned in lately who ever got it is nearly paying to do the job so a sense of urgency will not be seen.

    Mike,
If you remember they ran the drags there at Puddingstone for years. Always a beautiful setting and you wont find a better place or layout for spectating than Puddingstone. The problem you face is the depth of the water. Several lives have been lost there due to problems locating the boats in a short time after they crashed. Its deep and it's deep early. The bottom is very black and impossible to see down there. We have pingers and locating devices but most of the racers in the higher classes (capsule classes) decided to boycott Puddingstone and that eventually killed it. I believe the last race run there was 1999. I would love to go back there and race the drags. It would put Elsinore to shame (and that is not a slam on Elsinore) It just has a richer history.

...and the amount of spectators that showed up to Puddingstone was flat out amazing, either Elsinore or Puddingstone would be RAD! IMO

with the amount of partcipitaion we have seen lately (Racers and Fans)I would hope we could continue the momentume of our sport. NJBA has a good thing going would be nice not to loose 2 races due to track conditions. I understand its easier said then done though
