Default Opinion on a 18.5' 1976 Mantra for first boat?

I'm talking to a local seller (hard to find inexpensive jets in texas apparently) about his 18.5' 76 Mantra jet.

single axle trailer, has mild pump gas 454, berkley JE with jetovator, quarter stringer with reinforcement around mounts, medium layup, supposedly pretty low hrs since rebuild, no hull repairs or soft spots (according to seller), runs about 65-70mph on lake.

Think this would be a good deal for a first time boater on the river? I know Mantra had a short run back in the day but it seems decent and looks good in the pics.

    EDIT: Adding pic

    Default On the WATER....

Regardless of which boat you decide on you MUST insist the owner put the boat ON THE WATER and demonstrate any claimed performance numbers as well as expose any hidden problems. It is not uncommon for a boat to scatter the engine the first time a new owner takes it out. Make the seller wring it's neck for at least a minute of full throttle running... Look for oil leaks, water leaks, knocking, vibrating, etc..... The boat shown for $2900 looks like a better deal than the white one, and it's considerably cheaper, but still, ON THE WATER, not on the trailer.....

If a seller won't/can't put the boat in the water, run away, grab your wallet and run away... The only exception to that rule is a boat that is being sold as a project and priced as a project....

Awesome, thanks for the tips. Is 2900 a project price? I know 6000 isn't. lol Just don't know anything about Mantra's and Panther pumps. I've also never heard of Mariah though

No, 2900 shouldn't be considered a project price. Mantra, Mariah, Kona, Challenger, Tahiti, etc etc, are all pretty much the same. One copies the other.... Can you trick out a Panther pump? Yeah, I guess you could, but isn't the bottom line "FUN"? I'm quite sure you could have just as much fun as if the pump were a Berkley or Jacuzzi... The main thing is the WATER TEST. Does any prospective boat fulfill your needs? Enough seating for the family? Yet small enough for you to handle duties at the ramp yourself? Easy to fish out of?? Pull the kids skiing or tubing?? Does it require $8.00 a gallon race fuel? Or will it run on pump gas 91? (This is important, a jet boat can easily run through 2 or more tanks a day).... If you're in doubt about your ability to "look one over real well", ask for some help. There are plenty of people here willing to give you a hand depending on your area....
