Default Pump shaft seal leaking after tightening

I spent the last two weeks at Trinity lake in N.Ca....Been doing it since 1965(Oh god I'm old.....) Anyway, I noticed a drip-drip from the shaft seal so I tightened it a little and it stopped...next day, after running over to the marina it had started again....Every other day I tightened it and as soon as I ran it the thing would start leaking again....I have so far tightened it approx' 1/2"....I have replaced it once before..made a hook tool for pulling the seals out....But why would it not stop after tightening?

    Anyone else have this problem?

You`ve tightened it too much. Let it drip drip to keep the seal cool.

that seal needs to drip a little to function properly and have longevity. I believe Berkeley recommends 1 drip drop per minute-ish. LOL real scientific! If you need to keep tightening it then I'd say either you have tightened it "crooked" and/or that seal needs replaced again. good luck

Wait...It has been dripping while running since I installed it....I get that you want a little water....But it drip-drips when not running now, so I tighten it and as soon as I run it it starts dripping again...More than one drop per second.

The rope packings are of the Graphite impregnated style, and I installed with anti-seize......never had problems until up at Trinity in June/July.....when just sitting at night my automatic bilge-pump had to run at least once every 1/2 hour to deal with the water coming in...Seems excessive to me....
