This is what I found today when I took off one of the heads. I don't even want to take the other one off. #4 and #6 had 0 compression that's what led to taking it apart to find this. The head is definately toast. There is a nice crack between 4 and 6. If it is salvagable then I will be in the market for some good aluminum heads. Chime in and let me know. Thanks.

It depends on how deep the gouge is. a machine shop will be able to tell you for sure, you can only deck the block so far, I am going to say it's block time

Saw this many times on turbo engines. Should be able to weld up with no problems.

Cracks may be another issue if they're in the cylinders. Sleeves can fix those though installed properly.

At some point tho you have to figure if the block is worth saving in terms of $ depending on it's condition, other machine work required, etc.

    Default Maybe

It could be saved but the expense may be equal to another block. Repair it for a grocery getter station wagon............Is it a 4 bolt?.......I have some 2 bolt blocks if you just want to get back on the water, also some ready to run cylinder heads.......Ray

Haha very funny. It has been like this a long time jerk off. Rub salt in the wounds that's ok. I hope we meet at the river sometime. Well see how fast your rogers really is.

so the head has a crack or the block does?

I'd take it apart and get the block over to the machine shop. There is no way we can diagnose for you over the internet.

    Good luck.

    There it is.
I have a couple 2 bolt blocks with cyl. cracks. Yes, they can be sleeved and the cracks repaired, but to what end?
Boats have a way of exposing weaknesses very quickly.
Personally, I would not put it back in a boat, or any other performance/ endurance application.

It is a four bolt Merlin 509. I don't think the machine work is going to cost as much as it would to replace it but I am looking for a new one just to get on the water until I can get this one put back together. What do you have and how much you asking? Thanks.
