    Default Missing wear ring insulater?

    Working on a new to me boat. Spent the last couple weeks getting the motor worked out. Finally got it fired up today thanks to the help of a buddy. Well we immediately heard some weird noises from the pump and pulled the inspection port. The wear ring was just flopping around like there's no insulator in there. I can easily reach in there and move it side to side and even spin it. Looks like a brand new stainless impeller along with place diverter on a Berkeley 12jg pump. How in the world would you even assemble it without the insulator? Or is it possible it disintegrated?

    Plan on ordering new parts so I can hopefully water test it next weekend but not sure what I need to look for or order. I'm guessing I should pull the impellor and hope it's still in usable shape and probably measure it. Sounds like getting the nut off may takes some work.

    Likley is you may be able to simply pull the bowl, remove the impeller and re use the wear ring with a new insulator assuming no damage occurred to the suction housing bore where the ring is seated or the the wear ring surface on the impeller

    having a hard time visualizing how you could even see the wear ring through the handhole with the impeller and bowl installed, let alone be able to move it. you can't even access the wear ring without the impeller removed, unless the bearing is toast and the whole thing ground itself forward.
    yes, you'll need to remove the bowl and impeller to get to the wear ring. if you're running the engine with the pump connected and dry, you'll always hear some weird noises. even if there's nothing wrong with the pump.

    Well if you stand on your head at just the right angle you can actually see it. My buddy was actually the one who thought something was off and pulled the cover. I didn't believe him either at first. Sure enough I could move it side to side and I could spin it as well. I still don't get it, the impeller looks brand new and the guy who rebuilt the boat knew his stuff.

    i'd be very worried about the suction piece until I could pull it apart and check it. that's just not close to right.

    I just finished up making a impeller nut socket so hopefully it'll come apart tomorrow so I can check things out. Wondering if the prior owner ran it dry or sucked something up and spun the wear ring. Pretty sure I'm about to find out.

    I may be wrong on this or reading it wrong but if you can wiggle the shaft around you may have more issues to check out. the shaft should be supported by the front bearing and the bowl bushing to not allow any "easy movement" ?

    I have not gotten to the shaft yet to see if it's got any play but will be checking that out for sure

    Well I got it pulled apart last night and figured out some things and it's not looking too good. My bowl bushings are shot, they were basically gone. There was also some damage to the shaft so that likely needs replaced or machined for a slip on. The bushing also pretty much welded itself to the bowl, hoping that can be machined out. The wear ring spun in the suction housing and that's a little rough so not sure if that's salvageable or not.

    Now I've got to figure out if it would be cheaper to rebuild this one (which needs machining) or find another pump (hard to find around here) and rebuild it.

    where are you that makes it hard to find? you may just want to replace the suction piece. don't wobble the shaft around if it's not supported by the bowl. bearing located in suction piece may also be damaged.
    you're getting to a point where a pro should be used. shaft needs to be aligned so the impeller is perfectly centered. if shaft alignment, from bearing to bushing, is not centered, the impeller won't sit in the wear ring properly, and tolerances will be ruined immediately.

    I'm in Iowa so I can probably count on two hands the number of jets I see a year. Here's how things look. I don't have a pic of the suction housing but it's a little chewed up as well.

    In Des Moines and thinking of sending it to ARS Marine to do the machine work and rebuild. I have found a new bowl and shaft locally that I may pick up that are on really good shape.

    Where in Eastern Iowa are you, I'm guessing you boat the river? Many jets out there? I primarily boat Rathbun lake and I hadn't seen any jets up until this year now we've got 4-5 regulars.

    Mostly the river and red rock. Moving to Lynnville ( near Newton) so probably Red rock, Rathbun, and Sailorville next year. I have a spare pump setup in the shop in Keokuk. Jet boats are coming back around the rivers. Mostly because those stupid carp don't jump when jets go by.
