I bought a day crusier last year. It has the Hardin Marine 460 Ford in it with a Berkley Jet. When I got it, the rear mount starter was noisy. After using the boat a few times the starter would spin, but not engage. I had it rebuilt and they put a new drive gear and all the other stuff needed for the rebuild. I installed it last night, and it turns over good, but it is still noisy. Sounds like a Chevy starter that needs to be shimmed. Is there shimming that should be done with this type of starter? It looks like if you add shims, it is only going to move the starter out from the bell housing. Or is this common with the rear mounted starter? The ring gear looks good. I don't see teeth that look ground down.
Thanks for the help.
Check to see if the starter drive is hitting the flywheel? Chevrolet starters bolt up and fords bolt in. with that being said check were the noise is coming from! Alittle grease and a spin with-out fire up will tell you were the bind is. M
