    Default water line routing-hardin marine exhaust

    anyone know the correct way to route the water lines? i just had my engine replaced and it ooks like my mechanic routed the lines differently. so, from intake to exhaust does anyone know?

    I don't think Hardin Marine made headers but I could be wrong. Here's a log plumbing schematic.

    so my question (where i think the mechanic got it wrong) is on the log itself; there is 2 holes, does it matter which one is used for the inlet/ outlet? it seems like he got them reversed from how it used to be.

    I always tried to set mine up with cooling water entering one end with the warmer water going into the engine from the other end. Since the logs have a big cavity, it really doesn't matter which hole goes where.

    here's a pic of a log looking from the rear without the riser attached.


    when the riser is attached, it plugs off the cavity on the exit side of the log so no water can enter the exhaust flow at that point. On this particular log, you can see the provision for a rear fitting in the lower right port.

    should be 3 ports in the logs - 2 in the front, and one at the back of the log (not the snail). there were 3 on my old hardin's, and there are 3 on the harmon's i have now.
    when i first got this thing, the harmon's were plumbed like this - using the in/out both at the front of the log. that didn't seem to me like it would force flow all the way through the log, and the back end could possibly overheat. after running the thing a couple times (engine cooling was fine) i pulled 'em off, removed all three port fittings, and found the back half of both logs were full of sand. flushed 'em for quite awhile, getting all the sand out.
    now i use the front top port, and the rear port. i also plumbed mine to have the pump feed the engine, then from the t'stat housing to the top front of the log, out the rear log port and into the snails. works fine.

    You will normally have a high and low fitting in the logs. Water goes in the low fitting and out the top. That way it fills the manifolds up. Most logs have 2 fittings. I'm not certain on the Hardins but I think they were the old Nicson castings with the Hardin name plate in the mold. If so they should have 2 fittings on one end.

    glad i read this!
    i had just plumbed my Indy logs with the inlet on top - thinking it will flow in the top fitting then out the lower one, never thought about it draining straight out and missing out on filling up the logs.
