    Default ford 460 help please

i have a 77 spectra jet with a 460 ford in it. engine was redone by harmin marine. since i had it i notice something dont sound right. running on trailer with water of course it sounds like its laboring or sick. i checked the timing its at 10 deg initial and firing on all 8. i put a new 750 carb on it also. plugs are gapped at .44 . i notice it has the old ford dist with the stinger ignition and i checked it and it advances proper. at idle when you smack the throttle it hesitates or shoots the flame. it i go slow it takes it. when you let the throttle off it drops under 800 rpm then brings itself back. im so lost can anyone help me. it honestly sounds like its running on 6 or 7 but all 8 are going........any suggestions

When was it redone? Also how do the points look? That would be the first thing I ditched. I have a 460 in a Kona and the first thing I bought was a MSD ready to run dist. Ran much better! May want to check and see if your dist is in the correct position. Sounds like you may be a tooth off?
Good luck and keep us posted.

How could he be a tooth off when the light shows 10* ?

I would put about 10* more timing in it and see how it acts. If that works I would scrap the old technology and get some new quality MSD ignitition parts. I run 38* total, locked out in all my jet driven BBFs, we are not trying to pull through the gears.

Sounds dumb and i know it sounds like uve checked everything well but verify your firing order. There are a few "close ones" which can cause some issues if you cross em

1-5-4-2-6-3-7-8, 1-2-3-4 pass side, 5-6-7-8 drivers, dist turns counterclockwise
    If you ain't hittin bottom...you ain't jetboatin!

This could be it. I know an FE will run with 7 and 8 crossed. Not well mind you, but it will run sluggishly...... Ray

PS one more thing, check to see that the carb squirts at the very slightest movement of the throttle shaft. Check this with the ENGINE OFF while looking closely down the carb. It MUST squirt the first time the shaft is moved, not the second or third time.

sounds to me like you need to advance your timing just a hair. my boat did that same thing last year right after we put the motor in.

i have a feeling it has something to do with electrical. ill check make sure its not a rooth off. i did some reading and it sounds like ford put retardation in the timing gears on later model 1975 on for smog. not sure . i set it at 13 and it was a slug on the bottom end. ii put it at 10 and seems to like it better. the boat just do have the healthy sound. it could be thats a ford but i dont know. points were removed when the stinger was put in and went to magnetic. ill be changin it to but cant right now. last was in the water i could only get about 3800 to 4k in rpm out of it. boat felt like more was in it but something was holding it back.

Sounds like a combo of not enough advance RATE, and total advance. (Which you did not list) AND possible accelerator pump problems.

I also run the MSD "ready to run" billet dist. and have ZERO issues with it. (BBC)
I do use the mech. advance only, but have it set to be all in at 2200-2400 RPM (35*)
Also have it set for only 14* mechanical advance, so idle is 21* at around 900-1000 RPM.
The "flame" deal does suggest crossed wires, however.

x2 slow timing and not proper amount of fuel from accelerator combination.

Sounds like a lean condition, very lean....by the way, did you install a new Edelbrock carb? That would more-so make me suspicious of a lean condition .

Fuel, timing.....by the way, make sure you have no water in your fuel tanks, if the boat sat all winter while the engine was being rebuilt.

Put the timing in full at 2500-3000 rpm. Then work backwards, this way you won't cook the engine.

Being I am working today again as I have all weekend, just swing it by the shop and I will give you a hand tuning this thing.

Mind you its free help from one Ford and Sanger guy to another on a Holiday weekend doesn't get any better than that.

Does it have a amp gauge???

last summer when I dropped a new motor in my boat I ran into the same problem......everything was checked 10 times buy my friend who has be a mechanic all of his life since we were old enough to drive and he couldnt figure it out so he called up one of his buddies he works with a electrical kind of guy and he came over and ran threw everthing again ......but then he went up to the dash and started messing with the amp gauge....fired it up and the problem was gone...the amp gauge was fried......so it wasnt getting enough juice to run and has ran fine since...Just a thought ya might want to check that out.

OK today i took the boat out. i checked the timing and was 10 deg and full advance was 35 deg. changed the solenoid and same issues, so i know its not that. i bypassed the resister in the ignition. seemed to run smoother then. took it on the water and little slow getting on plane but when it did it took the throttle and ran the best it has ever. at idle i think its loading up and dropping a hole because it frickin shakes the boat. hit the gas it goes away. . another thing it does have a amp Guage ill look into that. I'm going to change the ignition switch tomorrow. when i put engine back in i turned the valve covers to have the breathers in the back. big mistake. the pass side spued on the intake. about 1/2 cup and in the bilge. i know I'm having issues with it but i know I'm at least going fwd. ill order a complete ignition and dist tonight for it from msd. I'm sure its a box stock internals in the engine. thank you all been awesome, any more ideas for me hit me up.
