    Default 427 or 454 or ???

    my buddies boat is a nightmare....... in the last 2 months. first the pump took a dump, we rebuilt it. then his MSD crapped out, he replaced it. now the engine. it's a chevy 427 and we pulled it out and broke it down and the block and crank are done. the boat is a 1987 sleekcraft 19 ft closed bow. should we look for a 427 or what engine would be the best fit? any advise is appreciated.

    Go big now and avoid the want later.

    You'll find used 454's much more comon than 427's (same bore block, just crank difference).

    What happened? Oil pressure failing or something catastrophic?

    Rarely does a running engine have a "done" block and crank.

    If the block is an actual 427 casting, in good shape, and standard bore it could fetch enought to buy a ready 454.
    The 427 won't see the big hp #'s that more inches would get you, but they are very stout and alot of times of a higher comp ratio. With the engine getting through the RPM range pretty quickly they can make really good jet boat plants.

    we took the engine apart and then took it to an engine guy who pointed out a crack near the rear main and said the crank shaft had been screwed up by the bearing grenading............if it could be fixed he was gonna do it and make money so we believe what he says.

    the jet pump completely siezed and we are thinking thats what caused the engine to fail............too much pressure/ heat. it happened while we were going about 60 and the engine just shut down immediatly

    I would bet that most on here would agree that the jet will like the higher torque of the 454 (longer stroke). Not to mention, there are tons of cheap used parts and fairly cheap new parts available for them. My .02 is go with bigger inch deal....

    Yeah kinda sucked as it was a real 427 block (needed to be bored though) and the crankshaft was std steel. The guy happened to be at Beans Crank when I was there yesterday and the thrust was actually bent it was so bad. I took a look at the block and you didn't need to even mag it... rear main was BLACK and you could see the crack big as day from the oil hole.

    I suggested it had to be one of two things... pump bearing thrashed or not enough clearance in the driveline. Kinda cool hearing that I was right... though it does suck for your buddy... sorry about his luck.

    Build a 454... parts are much cheaper and easier to come by.
