    Default oil

what type of oil are people running out there???

i got a stock 454 bbc and i wanna know what a good oil and oil filter is for my motor.

what weight, type (synthetic/ non synthetic), and brand of oil are people out there running.

heard somewhere that synthetic wasnt good to run because it wasnt a good rust inhibitor...

    Mobil1 20/50 summer, 10/30 winter
I put in a steel oil pump drive. Don't like the idea of warming up with 80+ psi and a plastic coller.

    Default No more zinc!

I run mobil 1 with zddplus additive because almost all oils on the market now contain no or negligable amounts of zinc, which is what best protects solid lifters. Anything that is "emmesions compliant" has no zinc in it.

I havent heard the "synthetic is not a good rust inhibitor" thing but I will look into it.

I've heard that Rotella is a good oil. I have used it in my big trucks for years. I had an engine built for a pickup, and the builder recommended Rotella multi. I have Royal Purple in another pickup that we built, and I hate paying for it.

Rotella is a good oil...but I feel it belongs in a low spinning rpm Diesel >where it's designed to be >not a higher sustained RPM boat engine. Higher RPM's want to sheer a oil apart
Just saying, I tried it and didn't care how water thin it became. Personally, I feel better with a 'race oil' in my engine.
There are some GREAT race/performance oil's out there that have the zinc etc some are looking for > Brad Penn is just one of them. http://www.bradpennracing.com/

    Default Rotella and delo

Both Rotella and Delo 15-40 are made for diesels in my opinion, the have alot more of the anti foaming agents in them than other oils.

I run Rotella 15-40 in my powerstroke and will never trust it to anything else. If you want to start a fight with diesel guys just ask them which is better Delo or Rotella. Three days later you still wont have an answer but you will have enjoyed the fight.

Are you running a high volume oil pump?

As for me...Valvoline VR1 20/50 at the moment. VR1 still has the ZDDP in it, which is only needed for flat tappet cams. Gonna do some experimeting with running thinner oils once I install an oil temp gauge.
