Default Anyone know the history of CP's

I didn't want to hi-jack the tread Texas Longhorn Tunnel, so I'm asking my question here. I bought my CP from the original owner Ray Martin back in 1998. The boat has a manufacture date of 1978 and the first three letters on the hull ID are PJB (Performance Jet Boat). Ray said he bought the boat from Scotten, but it came from Texas. Does anyone know the history of when Earl Smith's boat's became CP's, other than Scotten (we have a communication problem)?

check out the Youngblood site ( http://www.youngbloodjetboats.com/ )

some good information there & the complete history of the Gullwing.

Earl Smith worked with Jim Youngblood designing & manafacturing them. Bill was selling them as a dealer before purchasing a mold.

Thanks Busby, that is informative. The article mentions that Scotten has been building the 19 for over 20 years, which we all know. I heard that Scotten got the 18 mold from Earl Smith with the agreement to provide hulls to Earl. Later Bill started calling them California Performance hulls. It sounds like mine, built in 1978 must have been about the time Bill got the mold as it was a PJB number, Sold by Bill, but came from Texas. It's interesting to know the history of your boat, I'm sure everyone feels the same way.

I believe 1978 is about when Bill aquired the rights to performance boats of texas. Bill won't say but I believe It was a lawsuit settlement by Earl Smith and Bill. Bill still produced hulls under Performance Boats until he got his own Him# in about 1991. Hope this helps. Pat

Here is what the USCG shows. Funny thing is Bill Scotton tried to sue me when I was building my Predator Gullwings and it went nowhere. I never have and still don't see where he is or was the owner of the PJB mfg's ID Code.

    Default CP

In August of 1979 Bill Scotten and I (being Greg Shoemaker)purchased the 19 Gullwing mold from Earl Smith.I recaged the mold and Dennis Winzen layed up our boats. After about one year it was agreed that we part ways leaving Bill as the sole owner of Calif. Perf Jet boats. I still did all the rigging at my shop in Anaheim and still continued to race for Eliminator. In the meantime Earl made the 18 because of all of the blow overs on the 19's. Smaller ,lighter , they took the market away from the 19 and we still built a few race boats but the 18 was at this time the more popular of the two models.

So what MIC (HIN) is California Performance Boats using? If you even do a search by name(personal or business), nothing comes up with the USCG as being registered?

Mike, I didn't know you went that far back with this stuff. I thought Dave Batista was doing almost all of Calif. Perf. rigging back then.
