    Default dirty tanks

    my buddy just picked up a 73 southwind with a 455 olds and i guess the tanks are dirty and have some stuff on the bottom of the tanks..i dunno if its realy old gas or dirt but it clogs up every filter he puts in it..the tanks are fiberglassed in and i was wondering if I should cut them out and clean them or cut them out and replace them with a pair of aluminum ones..what do you guys think??

    Well, they come out one way or the other. I would clean them personally, easiest re-install. Be damn near impossible to get replacements exactly the same size/shape to fit.

    If the tanks are fiberglass themselves, you don't want to screw with them. If they're aluminum, yeah go ahead.

    Depending on the builder, the outside wall of the tank may be the hull itself- cutting it out will leave you a big pain in the ass and a call to IMCO for tanks. Here's what I've learned from those that know- fill the tank with water and Dawn soap, drive the trailer around the block a few times and then pump it out with a bilge pump that has a hose inlet. Do it again and then with clean water. Let it air out and then put in a few gallons of diesel and trailer it around. Pump out the diesel. Let it air. Done.

    You can use a steam cleaner but watch the blow back and the temps as the fiberglass inside may be on the dry side as far as resin. You could accidentally inject steam into a void and then you end up calling IMCO.

    Either way, getting the taller Frams will let you filter better and longer for a while and then I'd think you'd be good to go.

    Storytime......

    Once, a long long time ago, on a river not far from here, a knucklehead(remaining nameless)bought a boat that had it's gas caps removed and had rainwater in them. They appeared clean and the person pumped them dry and proceeded to put the boat together. The maiden voyage went well and then the boat would only run for 5 minutes at a clip. New fuel pump, fight with the carb,start,run for 5,stall,fight with the carb,stall,wait 5,restart,run 5, stall,over and over and over.
    Finally this guy cuts the fiberglass,takes the tanks out,pulls the pickups out to find that those little maple tree helicopter seeds were in the tank and every time it started they would suck up in the tube until it clogged. After stalling they would float back down letting fuel back in.
    Moral of the story is - take them out, you gotta know what's up with the tanks....

    i had the same problem with my tahiti. i got it from a guy and it had been sittingfor awhile and the tank got rust in it. at first it was ok then it would only run for a few minutes at a time. i had a clear fuei filter on it and could see all the rust. i installed a fram hp1 spin on filter and all my problems went away i changed the filter at the end of the season and have had no problems since and that was 5 years ago.
