    Default Race shaft= magnetic???

    Just curious, once on here I heard race shafts were magnetic. The one I have is just as magnetic as the race shaft I bought. No it doesn't have a 17-4 stamp on it, oddly enough neither does the one I bought??

    any purpose for them being magnetic or is it a byproduct of the manufacturing process?

    Odd for Stainless Steel to exhibit any magnetic abilities, something about that alloy.

    No "purpose" I could imagine, just happens.

    You know that impact (especially repeated impact) on a carbon steel shaft (like with a hammer) will magnetize the shaft to some extent.
    I wonder, repeated torsional forces on the shaft..................... maybe............

    Heres a little info from a metalurgy site , tested a few dozen shafts in the "core pile" found 80% (mostly OEM berks) had little to no magnet attraction but the hardened 17-4 shafts all did ...

    Magnetic permeability is the ability of a material to carry magnetism, indicated by the degree to which it is attracted to a magnet. All stainless steels, with the exception of the austenitic group, are strongly attracted to a magnet.
    Austenitic Grades

    All austenitic grades have very low magnetic permeabilities and hence show almost no response to a magnet when in the annealed condition; the situation is, however, far less clear when these steels have been cold worked by wire drawing, rolling or even centreless grinding, shot blasting or heavy polishing. After substantial cold working Grade 304 may exhibit quite strong response to a magnet, whereas Grades 310 and 316 will in most instances still be almost totally non-responsive.

    So does this mean that the 17-4 shafts "ARE" magnetic or "WILL" attract metal such as a razor blade as pictured above? Conversely does this mean that a stock shaft " WILL NOT" attract metal???

    Thanks guys, if I'm reading this right It's possible for a/my "plain jane" shaft to have magnetic properties?? I dunno if I'm trying to talk my self in to using the new shaft or cheaping out and using the old one. My junk is so slow I have a hunch the old one will be o.k. I just ran my boat yesterday for the 1st time with my new domi and lost 200r's. You guys were supposed to tell me mine must be a race shaft then.lol

    Pretty sure you got that backwards.The AQ shafts are hard chromed, making them magnetic. 17-4 shafts (stock) are non magnetic. Magnetic shaft is better than non magnetic.

    Magnetic= race shaft.

    There are some Dominator shafts that are magnetic but are possibly not as good as a true race shaft because of the type of stainless.. I dont know how much HP they can take but Id be cautious with huge HP.

    Those are 416, that was thier base shaft years ago. Still a better shaft than the standard 304

    My late model (2003)AMT shaft stamped 17-4 and is magnetic.

    Race pump built in early 80's shaft non magnetic but stainless impeller is. Beautiful Butterfly magnet sticking to it.
