    Default Quick packing question..

Sooo with my rebuild kit I have a couple of black pieces of rope. I'm doing my best to see where it goes(none came out of the pump when I tore it apart). Near as I can tell, according to my manual, it goes here. Sorry for the extreme close up, I wanted you to attempt to see what's in there now.

Edit: here is another pic. the area in the photo is under the black rope/packing. Check out my nifty bowl bushing.lol Sorry for the blury pic, f'n flash won't work..

I may be way off, but those would wrap around the bearing cap for a three point mount..

The old white material comes out and the new goesin. Rotate the butt faces at least 75.25* apart.

Why only 2 then. When you get new packings they come precut and 4-5 each. But i think they are packings as well.

So the rubberized dealio goes in the round file, and I install 4 or 5 pieces of rope????????????? I may skip this section of the rebuild.lol The rubber deal fits like a glove. Wtf does the packing do exactly...

You might look at what the market offers... Packing comes in Grades... The older packings were from Industrial applications and based on 2300 RPM's. had a wire core inside... Our Dealers carry a Graphite weaved and it has a RPM base
much Higher. The clocking location stated above will give you a good seal and the retighten after is critical.... Remember to allow it a very minor drip on final setting as that is also a lube element you want. Some will only take 4 and then you run and the 5th will go in...

Thanks guys....I just pulled these 2 out of the suction housing, I thought it was all in one piece. My bad... I guess I figured out where the black pieces of rope go.lol BTW could this have been why my boat leaked like a pig(worn packing gland).

Yes, it very well could have been. It was the reason mine did a few years back.

Kreg the packings you have are graphite impregnated/coated , remove all the old packings with a small hooked tool or pick (could be 4 or 5) Then be sure to use a "blade" to clean and scrape the inside of the packing housing , lube this area as well as the pump shaft , put the new packings in with gaps at 6 and 12 o'clock (alternate) use one the packing "ears" as a "hand tool" to carefully push the new packings back top and bottom (one at a time) then install the two halves of the "ears and "snug evenly" readjust after you run it a bit Call if you have ?? tom

Ummmm... I assume that the packing goes in somewhat last. In other words the impeller and shaft are in 1st?? Also shouldn't I hand pack the thrust bearing or something??? What's the best bearing/pump grease??

Some folks like to "load" the packings before the shaft some mfg websites advocate this , this is not the way i learned nor do we do that I always assemble my jet , check and recheck clearances and turn for "true feel" (without the resistance of the packings present ) then install the packings last and tension Re Grease we use Lucas or SKF or Duanes famous "red stuff"
