Exclamation NEW TO THE JET BOAT SCENE! Advice??

Hey there all, im an Aussie new to the Jet Boat scene. Been following and learning about Jetboats, and Jetdrives for the last year.

I was recently lucky enough to snap up a 500hp 79 Bahner with 454BBC, and Berkeley 12JC pump that was recently imported into Australia. Its a great boat, wicked fast and i love it! Its great to jump on Youtube and the forums to see some of the extreme Jet boats that you guys over in the states build!

My Berkeley pump has been recently reconditioned, but im already planning some upgrades. It already has a loader scoop but parts i am looking at include:

    - Inducer impeller and suitable matching shaft. (Get a better hole shot)
    - A/T Split Bowl with built in stuffer and matching A/T impeller.
    - Berkeley style Droop snoot
    - Hyd Place diverter.

Jetboats from the 70's 80's era are non existant over here! So i wanted to spruce the jet up, give the boat some more punch, and be able to throw a roost!

Problem i have at the moment, is while i cruise the boat has a porposing problem. The only way to help prevent it from occurring is to have the passengers sitting towards the nose as far as they can.. Or you have to perform a gradual turn to stop it bouncing, or just back right off the throttle.

At full noise it doesnt do it, but at cruising speeds it does. Will the droop and place diverter help eliminate this problem?

Jim and Performance Jet believes that the droop could make the situation worse. So im not really sure what avenue to take. I really want the boat to not porpose, but still be able to throw a good roost. I understand every boat is different, i just need to discuss it with people from the USA because there isnt many people in the know over here.

Maybe i should keep the JC housing and Berk impeller, and just add the diverter? Roost wont be as big, but i dont want to make the porposing worse!

Also another thing, what is the purpose of a shoe/ride plate?

Any advice/ideas for the Jet boat owner in Australia?

Is it an open bow? Can you post a pic? I know a droop gave my challenger V hull a little porpoise at cruising speed but not at wot. But like you mentioned all are different. A diverter should get rid of your porpoise, and with a droop or wedge make a nice roost. Post a pic of your hull and pump setup and what you have. How many people/gear do you have in the boat?

What kind of loader is it? You shouldnt need a shoe, rideplate, or inducer yet. start with the diverter. will help holeshot. you can get one for a jc bowl but youll probably want to switch to a split bowl eventually if you want to add a droop/wedges etc.

before you spend money on pump accessories i would check to see what impellor it has and see if it needs a rebuild. that would definiteley affect your holeshot and rpms

A diverter would help you out! This is the first thing that I would change. It is the same diverter for the JC as the JG so if you do change bowls it will still work! WT

SOMEONE SAID YOU CAN'T TAKE IT WITH YOU! SO,IM BURNING IT UP ONE GALLON AT A TIME!

    Default More Bahner pics!

Here are a few more pics.

I've done a bit of thinking.... might go an A/T split bowl, new A/T impeller, snoot and Hyd diverter. Put a reco kit through it at the same time just to be sure! Jim @ performance jet has told me to experiment, maybe start with the droop snoot.... then if it porposes, try something else.

Then the offseason.... more head work, different cam, maybe a stroker kit. Hmmmm decisions decisions....

    Default ride plate

A ride plate would also likely help you with the porpoise, it cured it on my friends concorde. It involves some experementation though, length, width, and angle to to the keel of the boat. It can also make your boat ride drier, which will make for higher speed. A diverter is the easy way to do it for sure.
Boating is nothing like cocaine, boating is much more addictive and results in bigger parties!

x2 on the rideplate, bet the hull has hook at the transom, and a rideplate will hide it fine for now.

Dare to be different, if it turns out great you can claim you planned it that way.
