Wanted to see if anyone had got a Southwind Jet boat new had any old school pics and The story of buying.. Why you picked a Southwind and what kind of choices there were. My grandpa got one with 6 hrs on it and he loves talking about how good of a boat it was and how much my family enjoyed it. Any others?
We bought a 1976 20 footer and owned it for 18 years. I think that was the first year of the 20. This was a great boat. Had the 460 Ford. It was red with white pin striping and the center of the design was red metal flake. Always got a lot of great looks. The interior was white. My father in law had gotten a resale license and he ordered it for me. Think I paid $6000. They called and said the boat was done. Went to pick up and it had a tan interior. Showed him my receipt and said it was to be white. They said it would look like a whore house. I said that is what we want. A week later we picked it up. That boat was a great handling boat.
We lived in Newbury Park at the time and saw a boat in Oxnard at the dealer (next to the Wagon Wheel). It was yellow and white. Loved the look. Shortly after that I had gone to the drags at Long Beach Marine Stadium and there was an ad in program. My big decison was to go 454 or the 460. It was a $1000 difference. As I remember it was a dual quad setup and they called it an SS.....of course. I did not feel I could spend the extra.
We put a lot of time on the boat and taught a bunch of folks to water ski.
I bet you have all kinds of southwind tails futs it must have been cool having a grandfather that made something so cool that so many people still love. They are my fav for sure. I have had 2 of the 18's. Was there lots of choices when new? I used to work for Berkeley jet drive a few years back but no one could remember much about the southwinds.
I always liked the Southwind motorhome, Southwind boat combo.
Funny story....My grampa complained to fleet wood for taking that name. they ended up in court over it. the end decision was that they both could use the southwind name as a type or model, but not a manufacting name, so it was southwind by fleetwood..southwind by jemcraft. the jemcraft had to be changed from jeNcraft. my grampas last name was Jennings, so he called it southwind by jencraft untill a jewler allready had that name trademarked. so off to court he went and to piss off the jewler he said, hell i will call it jeMcraft to use the jewler as a pun. and there you have it..southwind by JEMCRAFT. there are still some early models out there with the jencraft name on the titles, dont worry, they are still the same...
That's a cool picture. There was few in our group who use to pull there southwind boats with there southwind motorhomes. That was along time ago, and I thought it was cool when I was a kid. We had kurtis jet that we pulled with a bubble top van. Have to dig up the pictures.
