    Default Ignition help

I have a 1985 Bahner 20.5' Sportster Daycruiser with an Indmar jetpac 454/405hp package. The ignition system is giving me fits and I thought I might convert it to an electronic ignition. Is this a good idea? What should I buy? MSD? Mallory? What model(s)? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks.

    Default Mallory

I used the mallory e-spark conversion kit for my dizzy, and I have had no problems, But it is a mallory distributor. Super easy to install as long as you have a small puller to get rid of the point activation wheel.

if u can find one at a reasonable price, i would use a magneto ...no hassles, no worries etc...also...there is a MSD plug & play ign that is suppose to be good, but, too many things can go wrong with them (Box)...for my $$$ a mag is the only way to go...i have used one for years on both BBC & SBC with n/p...just my .02 cents

when i decided to dump the points i went out and got a stock hei and got it curved, my uncle with the 455 bought a pretronics conversion kit works well and it has a rev limiter (i love it). i keep a brain and pick up in the boat just in case they dont give you much warning. starts so much better with it.

I agree with the MSD as being the best system.

If you don't want to spring for the MSD stuff, people have had good luck with Pertronix conversions.

Another option would be to pick up a Mecruiser Thunderbolt Ignintion. They are good solid units and hold up well in a boat. They have the ignition curve programed into the module though.

There, fixed it for you. I have had the same MSD box for 20 years, 3 times I screwed it up and never cost more than $70 for them to repair my f***kups. Would go to MSD if I were you.

I understand. Back in the early 70s(Yea I am older than dirt) we thought our Mallory dual points were cool shit. Then I learned about MSD and never looked back. Now that I said that, I am running blown on alcohol now so the jury is still out whether I can stay with it or not. Hope so, this ign has always been good to me.
